That's the wrong substrate. You want the shredded coconut husk. It comes in a brick and expands when its wet. It hold in tremendous amounts of moisture which is what he needs. Its often called eco-earth or bed-a-beast. Any petsmart or petco has it and its about $4 a brick. The substrate you have is almost as irritating as the paper he was on. Frogs/Toads have very sensitive skin and like soft substrate. The eco-earth is just like dirt, only its ok if they injest it. Not only is that large bark substrate hard on their skin, they will become impacted if they eat it.

He could also use a larger soaking dish. Do you have a spare glass pie plate lying around. Those work well. Or any baking dish that isn't too deep, like a 9 x 9 glass pan. Not metal.

I'm going to take a wild stab that he had paper fibers on him, and paper cuts from the shredded paper. It will take a while to heal up. However I do suggest a vet visit as well. He might need some antibiotics via syringe.

As of washing him off, he is declared passed-on. This is before the most recent pictures taken.
He has not moved and that little bump isn't moving the 3-5 seconds it was before and he's shrinking.
His eyes remain the same and that leg is still sticking out.

Makes me want to give up despite 4 prior successful frog/toad lives. Forced to give them away due to moving or loss of job, etc.

I'm thinking of getting a Rococco again, but nobody has them locally, so I have to source one through the webs.
I've located one in Florida at petswarehouse.com, but I fear their way of shipping.....fedex???

I'll be giving them a call shortly.

So far out of all 35 msg boards I'm registered on, I've received the most and best help on this one.

Thank you all for your generous help. He will be missed even if he was here for less than 2 weeks.

Re: Marine Toad Isn't Looking Too Good :(

sorry for your loss. I hope you can take what you learned and make a newer and better home. If you only had him for 2 weeks, there is a chance that there were pre-existing conditions beyond your control, and the stress from the changed enclosure aggravated it to the point where he couldn't fight it any more.

When you do get a new critter, be sure to throw everything out and start new, and be sure to bleach out the tank and rinse really well. Live plants will help too with humidity and hiding places.

Re: Marine Toad Isn't Looking Too Good :(

So I blended the coconut cubes into coconut shrubbery for this little guy named Hulk Hogan
The other one wasn't in there for very long, so I just threw away the old coconut cubes.

The length of time is irrelevant. If the other toad had a problem which is contagious, you just introduced it to your new pet!
I would strip the tank and disinfect it, start over with a new batch of the substrate and then return the frog.
And keep a very close eye on it.

I 100% agree with this. It only takes a minute for a problem to happen. Go out and get those bricks and clean out that tank!

Re: Marine Toad Isn't Looking Too Good :(

Sorry to leave out that I did give the tank a once-over, but not with chemicals. Had a bad experience with a little critter prior by using chemicals...very similar to the experience I had with the other one. If I need to use something, what should I use?

What is your take on shipping an animal? I fear the shippers lack of care from Florida to Washington...

Sorry to hear about your loss, I too have frogs and use bed-a-beast, with some dry areas, live plants, bubbling water bowl, etc. Never use topical antibiotics on any frog. You need to use a dilution of 50% sterile water to 50% IODINE or even more dilution.
You need to ensure you locate a vet that handles these types of animals.

I beg to differ. Topical antibiotic ointment is perfectly safe as long as its free from pain medication. However, your iodine combination if good as well.

Glad you cleaned the tank out. I use 10% bleach to water solution to clean out my tanks, and I RINSE VERY WELL and let it sit for a day to dry out.
