Ever Changing Color of My Fire Belly Toads

When I bought my FBTs, they were a bright green with a bright orange underbelly.

As they got settled into their tank, they went from bright green to a dull green/brown.

Whenever I disturb them with a water change, they go back to bright green for a day until they settle down again, then back to brown.

So my question is, do we think something is odd with the tank, like something off with the water and they go to brown? Only to be green when the water is fresh? Or is brown their natural color and they only go green when stressed?

I ask this because I have read limestone can cause an abnormal PH level in tanks which could cause stress. I have no idea if I have limestone though, i would have no idea what it looks like.

Hmm... You should get some fish tank test strips to test their water... I use the jungle labs 6 n 1 for my fish tank, and they tell me chlorine, hardness, softness, ph, nitrate, nitrite. I dont think you would need to worrie about nitrate and nitrite, but the rest could give you a place to start if you think your water is off.

i never thought about the fish tank kits. I could at least check my PH. I have kits. Maybe if its off, i'll get a turtle dock or something, or some weird fake thing to put in it, and see what happens. They need a place to rest that is sort of half in/half out of the water.

Re: Ever Changing Color of My Fire Belly Toads

well, i checked my PH and it was high off the charts, 8.0+

YIKES!

So I went to petsmart and picked up a really neat platform thing and a few fake plants for them to climb in. I also added the required amount of PH down.

Hope they like it!

Liz, limestone is a tan to off white, colored stone. The only source of lime that I can see in your pics is that corner construction in the left hand side of the tank. What is it made of?

Re: Ever Changing Color of My Fire Belly Toads

there are no stones in there any more! That corner piece is a plastic pump/filter made to look like rocks.

Here is the temp setup I had before. Its the best shot I have of those rocks which were as of 2 days ago in the setup.

Re: Ever Changing Color of My Fire Belly Toads

I wanted to say, that ever since I replace the rocks with other items, my toads have been bright green. Poor guys. At least I know now.
