Crazy firebellied toad
My mom has a firebelly toad in a tank that is half water and half land. She has a filter for the water but it has a hard time with the algae so she got a pleco to go in there. She has done this twice and she goes to bed at night with a live pleco and by morning she has only a head and a tail left. She tried putting some guppies in there to see if the toad wanted to eat those but she didn't. Anyone know what is going on???

Re: Crazy firebellied toad
How large is this firebelly? How small are these plecostomus?
Even as babies, plecos are typically much larger than a firebelly or at least out of their dietary range. Please provide some pictures of this toad. I would love to see it! |

Re: Crazy firebellied toad
you can't house anything with firebellies. They are poisonous. Anything you house with it will die. I have heard of people housing pacman toads and firebellies and in 2 days the pacman is dead.

Re: Crazy firebellied toad
It really isn't smart to house any creature with firebellies unless it is food. When I was little, I always wondered why the newts were dead in the petstore. lol

I realize that fb's are poisonous, but could they actually eat a pleco after it dies to the point that all that remains is a head and tail? For those that don't know what a pleco is, this is a pic of one: ![]() |

Re: Crazy firebellied toad
Their poisons can get really strong in the tank. Its possible. Stick your hand in a fire belly tank that hasn't been properly cleaned and you will feel burning. Almost like a chemical burn. I suppose human skin is much thicker than that of a pleco and those chemicals could do much more damage. I could see it breaking down the skin of a fish, enough for them to eat it.
I will also add, fire belly toads are social animals. She should have more than one. a 30 gallon can hold up to 6. Rule of thumb with them is 5 gallons a toad.
