maybe getting a fire belly toad looking 4 advise

I was pondering the idea of using one of my 10 gallon tanks in the near future to get two or three little fire belly toads. I have looked online at several different care sheets and they all look as though you can house up two possibly three in a 10g tank. Which to me seems to make sense, since they do no seem to be huge li thing I was just wondering if I could get some general information on em just of curiosity sake at the moment...since I am doing some research on em.
Any positive help would be great!

Re: maybe getting a fire belly toad looking 4 advi

I just got some firebellies. They are cute little guys. They like half land, half water. I have seen setups as easy as aquarium stones piled up on one side higher to make land and then none on the other side to make water. Another idea is to make half water by inserting a large tupperware container with rocks in it to create the proper depth. Then when cleaning time comes its easy to pull out and change. Dechlorination of water is very important with these guys.

The only thing you really need to learn about is their toxicity. They are poisonous and build up toxins fast. With a 10 gallon tank and 2-3 frogs you are going to have to clean the water out once a week. Get a slightly bigger tank and you can add a filter and change it less.

Here is a good caresheet.

Well if I had to clean it once a week that would not bother me too much since I have to do that with a huge amount of my tanks anyway

Re: maybe getting a fire belly toad looking 4 advi

mine are really fun guys and very active. I think they are taking after my tree frogs. One is always sleeping up at the very top of the tank, wedged between the lid and the black rim with his little leg hanging down.

aww they are very cute little guys...I think after I get finished using my 10 gallon tanks right now I might look into getting some. I really don't thin cleaning once a week will bother me since I do that already with my Bettas anyway!

Re: maybe getting a fire belly toad looking 4 advi

I have had good luck with mine as well. As has been said, they like their water/land environment, and seem to exploit all parts of the tank - from the little live plant, to their pools, to their mush ground, cave, and dry mound. I do change the water frequently, but it's much easier with the little pools than if it were throughout the whole bottom of the aquarium. Mine eat almost anything - crickets, waxworms, butterworms, superworms, mealworms, whatever I have sitting around. They're quick eaters. They are also very quick to get out!!! You have to keep an eye on the rim of the aquarium whenever you open it. And you can't really handle them much because they can squeeze out your hand and move right along their hoppy way lickity-split (sp)! I have four in there, and they seem just fine. One is much smaller than the others. I've had them for several months with no problems.

One of their pools is a crescent shaped vomit bowl from the hospital. Of course, it was never vomited in. I like this little bowl because it's just deep enough to not splash out, and to let them swim/soak if they want to, plus it is an easy shape to work around in the corner, or by sticking a plant in the 'dented' part. There's another little pool in there as well, so they have options.

Let us know how it turns out.

Jennifer

Re: maybe getting a fire belly toad looking 4 advi

p.s. my next addition will be a fire-bellied newt (and/or perhaps a salamander). Probl'y in January after I'm recovered from upcoming med treatment. I'll probably seek advice then. I'm looking forward to it.

Re: maybe getting a fire belly toad looking 4 advi

you can get a large dish and place rocks in it so they can climb out. i dont have photos, but large flat landscaping rocks work great and will give them a nice variation of depth.
