Help please! I’m trying to figure out what kind of toad I have. When I picked this guy up at the pet store he was labeled "Red Horn Toad". I came home and tried to look him up online, but didn’t have much luck. The only additional information I could get from the pet store is that he’s from Africa. So have a look:

OMG! I have no idea, but that face is awesome! Thats a face only a mother could love, lol. I want one now! Matt should be along sometime to help! By the way that last pic is GREAT!

I have no idea what he is either, but he is a WONDERFUL amphibian!

I think my girlfriend may have found him. A google image search for "Bufo guttatus" seemed to bring up a lot of look-alikes.

I'm glad you guys like him! When I saw those big black eyes peeking up from the dirt at the pet store I just couldn't say no. Haha. I'll have to post some pictures of him hanging out in his ruined temple.

There are a few toads that look like this, but I believe your girlfriend found it, as Bufo guttatus is sometimes available in captivity. As with most unknown pet store herps, the name "red horn toad" was completely made up. These toads are from South America, not Africa, and are more commonly known as smooth-sided toads or Sapo Dorado. With parotid glands like that, they're likely to be toxic, so I'd take care to wash your hands after handling. I *believe* their care is similar to that of marine toads (cane toads, giant toads), but I never did read extensively on this species. Good luck with him, he's GORGEOUS! I'd like to have one someday
