So I got to cleaning some filters that a friend of mine gave me, he had one on a huge tank that he had a few toads and a turtle that all needed to be moved up, so I took his old filter that he was going to throw away because it was a great bio filter. I went to clean it and found that there were a few hundred tadpoles in various stages, I returned a few to him and kept a few and gave a few to the elementary school science department locally for their courtyard pond. The few that I have were raised on shrimp pellets for about 2 weeks, and then came toads really quickly.

Now I am on to raising wingless fruitflies because it is the only thing that I can find that they can eat. They are only about a quarter inch in size and very outgoing. The loved the fruitflies, and I really enjoyed watching their first hunting. Toads amuse me with their oafy stalking they use to hunt down their prey.

Oh, and side note... Fruitflies are escape artists, I had to resort to stranding them on a rock in the middle of the toad's short term makeshift cage (also called a critter keeper) to keep them in the darn thing, and I put that on top of the fish tank so that if they get loose the oscar gets a quick snack.

Any advice or recommendations for rearing are much appreciated, this is my first time with babies toads, so it is an experience.

(I beleive they are either southern toads, Bufo terrestris, or possibly the Eastern American Toad, Bufo a. americanus)

Pictures will come shortly

Re: Newbies

You can try putting blackworms in a water dish or small bowl. they will also eat tiny crickets, smaller waxworms, and pretty much any tiny insect or worm. increase the size as they grow. Remember that toads are not aquatic, there tank should be setup with moist sphagnum moss or a non-aromatic mulch. With a dish or bowl of water.

Re: Newbies

I understand that, but they still have tail nubs so I didn't want to take away their water yet, when they are a little bit bigger, maybe a week or so I will move them to peat moss and give them a shallow water dish.

I have not been able to find any places around here that have black worms, I know of a few that I can order from, but they were not expected. My local supply store gave me a culture of Fruit flies and instructions as to how to continue and culture more, so I started that. I am hoping to get them on to small meal worms ASAP.
