Fire Belly Toad Color change?

i'm not usually in this section as I don't know much about fire bellies. my mom works at a library and they have a fire belly toad there. i have seen it before and its light green in color with the dark spots and orange belly. lately mom has said she noticed it has changed from that color to a darker color kind of like brownish. it has happened before but has always changed back to its normal color a few hours later but this time its not changing back. i have no clue as what it could be since I know very little about them except that they'll eat crickets, need water and some sort of land. so I found out all I could about what its like according to mom since it has been awhile since i've been there.

-its in a ten gallon tank with a heat lamp ontop with I believe a screen top

-there's gravel on the bottom of the tank (big rocks, not any that can fit in its mouth)

-don't know whether or not there's a heater in the tank, do they need heated water? i know turtles need a heater in their tank but I don't know about frogs

-i have no idea of the temps i'll have to ask mom to check when she goes in next

-its been at the library for at least 3 years, it eats well. small crickets and some sort of orange/yellow squares that i'm not sure i've heard of.

any ideas on what this could be? i know its not alot of info but i've gotten what I can so I can at least put something on here. thanks!

ps-there hasn't been any change except for that the owner has recently cleaned the tank out but she cleans it out the same way every time. they have recently had the air on but the tank is no where near any vents or windows.

Re: Fire Belly Toad Color change?

By odd coincidence, I am a librarian in a library that has fire bellied toads as well. Fire Bellied Toads do quite well in normal room temps. If the AC blows directly on the tank, that could be a problem, but otherwise, don't worry about it. Daytime temps of low to mid 70's is fine, with lower night temps. If you can get a pic of the tank, that would help. As far as the color change, don't sweat it. They can change color several times in a day, or change colors and stay the new color for extended periods of time. As long as there are no obvious signs of illness (color change is not a sign of illness), I wouldn't get worried. I feed mine crickets, silkworms, and the occasional wax worm.

Re: Fire Belly Toad Color change?

lol thats so weird about the whole library thing. all the temps are fine then, i never knew they could change their color like that. there hasn't been any signs of illness and it eats well with no problems.

unfortunately I can't get any pics of the tank because the one woman who works there took it home but I will let them know. thanks for the replies!
