I found this guy out in the side yard in a development of a more urban than suburban area here in Charlotte, NC ... although there are a few parks/woods/ponds he could have come from...

I'm guessing a box turtle. His shell is a bit damaged, he's been around. I love his colors though...

I suppose I should just let him keep moving on his merry way? Not sure what I'd do with him anyway.

He looks like a male painted turtle to me. I'm not a turtle person however. :)

It's not a box turtle. I want to say yellow belly slider or something similar. Looks like it has some shell rot or something going on with its plastron.

Looks like it may be a yellow-bellied slider with those vivid yellow stripes. Box turtles have a dome shape carapace and their plastron is hinged so they can close up inside. Pretty little thing.

Thanks for the info! He was pretty - never saw a turtle with colors like that. Loved the black swirls on the yellow. He was zippy though, when I went back out to see where he was headed he was gone! And he didn't have too many choices in a path to take. I will be thoroughly checking under my car before I drive away, just in case.

Looks to be a yellow belied slider or perhaps a river cooter.

He does look like a yellow belly. If not he still appears to be aquatic. If he reappears maybe escort him to a nearby pond.

Definitely some member of Trachemys, the shell is a dead give away. Its funny to me, and no offense to the TC, that most people always want to call any turtle found on land a Box Turtle

Yeah it does seem weird. But I did talk with one person that tried to keep their box turtle in an all water aquarium...because it was a turtle and turtles go in water...

As far as the turtle I agree its a yellow belly slider.

Oh Yeah, I have seen that as well. I once had some woman post on my FB page, because for some reason I get a lot of turtle questions from complete strangers, that her new baby Turtle was just basking all the time and seemed to be afraid of the water. So ask for a pick of the set-up and the turtle thinking maybe it a Mud or something similar, and the water was too deep for it. Nope, it was a poor baby Gulf Coast Box Turtle.
