So the more I learn and try to do for my iguana the more confused I get. The basking temps frequently recommended for iguanas 88-95 deg F. Is that surface temp or air temp? I understand the difference, and I have a digital thermometer and an IR temp gun to measure both, but I'm terribly confused as to which number needs to be in that mid 90s sweet spot help?!?

That's your surface temperature. Your ambient air temperature should be cooler. I haven't had an iguana in 20 years, so I won't pretend I know the exact numbers. :)
