Totally new to Ackies ! The little man arrived on Saturday and has an appointment booked with our exotic vet for next Wednesday just to make sure everything is good. What do i need to be looking out for ? Are they prone to parasites i know with BD s any change will likely cause the parasite levels to increase because of stress, are Ackies the same? i booked the vet for next week so he is settled before going. He seems to have settled really well loads of digging and exploring I fed him this morning and he was hunting and seemed really hungry. I have not yet handled him just fed him and left him alone. He seems to be spending a lot of the time in the middle of the viv his basking temp is 125 middle is around 95- 98 and the cooler end (i am struggling with this side) is middle 80s humidity is 55% Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I don`t quite understand the temps you give, you say the middle is 95 to 98f, what size of enclosure is it and how are you measuring the temps, plus what type and wattage of heat bulbs, and lastly, can you show a few photos of the whole enclosure including a top view?
I remember you mentioning getting a monitor some weeks ago but I`ve forgotten whether you gave these details?

i took your advise and placed 2 bulbs side by side i tried 2 50w but could not get the temperature high enough so using 2 x 70w but now cool side to hot i think

It`s o.k I found it, the photos aren`t very clear, can you take a few more and give details of the heating/lighting and how you`re measuring the temps and humidity? I mean how are you measuring the ambient temps as well as the basking surface where you use the Temp-gun.

im worried that if i raise the basking platform he will too near the bulbs having real trouble finding the halogen ones you have. i am planning to increase the height of the new viv just so i dont worry about burns

Thanks for the photos, the enclosure looks far too small and you cannot get a decent depth of substrate, also, once the surface is penetrated it will rot in a short space of time. Which country are you living in?

In UK the custom build is happening now it is 5ftx 3x31/2 this set up is not ideal but is better than he was in what can i do short term the new viv will be here in 3 weeks.

I usually buy the par 30 or par 38 halogen flood beam bulbs from TLC Direct or The light bulb co (just put that in your search engine) you can also get them on ebay.
I think once you have the new enclosure it will be easier to maintain the conditions, especially around the basking area (heat) because you should be able to raise/lower either bulbs or basking object.

I think if the temps and humidity etc are o.k the monitor should be fine until the new enclosure comes although moving again will probably cause some more stress (but it has to be done).
If the animal is eating and active (normal behaviour) parasites aren`t necessarily present but you would be advised to get a faecal check done.

They`ll use every square cm of the enclosure if you give them the opportunity, and physical and mental exercise are extremely important to them.
