What a reptile!
So I have seen some pictures of tegus, and I am shocked and amazed. For those you that actually own a tegu, is it a LOT of work? How much, roughly, do you spend a month on food? How are they at swimming? I really haven't read much on them, just looked at pictures. Reading up on them comes next. Do you absolutely love them, or do you think you made a mistake getting one?

I see you haven't had any responses on your tegu query. I'll be getting one in August (God willing) and I'll hopefully be able to share with you my experience. I'm really thankful I have so many months for education/preparation since keeping herps is a completely new realm for me.
Let me know if you find out anything!!

Not too many Tegu keepers here, they require a large enclosure and can have bad temperments. I look at them all the time, but since I don't buy any herps and no one has dropped one off here at the rescue I don't have much experience with them. They are pretty though. Here is a website that may help. http://www.bluetegu.com/

well one X tegu keeper here! yeah they generally do have bad temperments.. but there like iggys. they can be tamed and are VERY rewarding when tamed... there very smart. they do require a large enclosure. there have very similar needs to monitors. the best tegu site ive found so far is www.thetegu.com its a forum for tegu owners/lovers very devoted people on that site

Although I've no experience with tegus, we think they are beautiful animals. Some tend to be more aggressive than others, and the black & whites I know can be dog-tame if brought up from a young age. They can be trained, and even the more bad tempered ones can be tamed if owned since a young age.
Good luck with your tegu Brendan - don't forget to post pics as soon as you get it!! What one are you going for?

I have a few Blues and Reds and they are all sweet as can be. Even the ones that don't get handled much are pretty easy going. The Columbians are the ones with the bad reputations. It's a question of getting the right animal and paying a little more instead of getting an import buy a captive bred animal. B&W, Reds and Blues are great.

Temperment
I had a b&w that was super-tame. They say temperment varies between sub-species, and I'm sure it varies between individual animals. I'd own another one.

I agree, some do not get dog tame. That is why it is best to get them that are produced from proven tame adults. I raise Argentine tegus, and my babies are a lot calmer then imports or farm raised animals.
