I have a quick question for any tegu folks out there. My collection has just expanded to include a juvie Colombian Tegu about 18" long. Rescued from someone whose novelty with the animal apparently wore off. This tegu appears to be very healthy and active, and is not as aggressive as some tegus I have encountered in the past. Yeah, I was disappointed it was not an Argentine.

Currently housed in a 30 gallon for now; will get larger enclosure in a month or so.

Anyway, I realize the animal may be too young to determine anything, but I would like to know if there are any outward ways (short of probing) to ascertain the gender. Anyone? Anyone?

Unless it's full grown, I believe probing is the only way to sex tegus I'm afraid.

My Columbian was sexed before I got her, and the vet agreed she's female. She was considered too mean for words by the pet store, and is actually really sweet. I've been back with her to visit, and they are still all afraid of her. She has been played with by small children at the fair, and by my granddaughter who carries her under her arm like a football.
