Substrate question

This is what our member has to say: Can I use 2" thick eggcrate as substrate? If not can you think of any good substrates that retains water (like a sponge)?...

Anything that retains water like a sponge will also act like a sponge and harbor and breed bacteria so no, 2" thick eggcrate would not be a good substrate. Like Marsha asked, "What are you using the substrate for?"

Water Dragons, I'm looking for ways to help keep the humidity up outside of a misting system and a floor that can absorb the access water moisture to keep the high humidity enclosure from flooding.

Some weeks ago there was a thread going on that suggested the use of a cloth, hanged from the top of the enclosure, being continuously kept wet by a drip system. Can't remember which thread or the outcome but I think that did the trick.

That was me. I was using a length of terricloth diped into a hanging can of water and the cloth was used to wick the water from the can. I think the thread name was "Passive Humidification" over on HH.

In a word FAILURE

Go look at the pics of my iguana cages. The ramps and shelves are all fabric over a PVC frame. I now both mist the cage and outright pour water over the shelves to allow them to dry and keep the humidity up for a while.

Substrate evaportation alone will not keep the humidity high enough so I am now looking for other ideas. For a cage the size of an iguana or WD cage where you want to keep humidity over 50% you will need to use a misting regiment or humidifier.

As long as it is made safe for that, I don't see why not.
If you do try it, please report your readings back. I would like to know if it indeed works.

EDIT Seems we answered at the same time =)
Failure? Oh well.. seems you're back to square one Dudeamis.
