OMGosh here we go again, this topic just HAS to come up one a year doesnt it, lol. Our opinion though this topic is a great debate is once dragons improve thier aim enough to not miss thier prey items, sand is fine, we move our dragons to "washed play sand" when they hit 9" in length. We have never had any problems with this routine, and none of our dragons have ever suffered an impaction. Until they reach this size they are kept on paper towel.

To be quite honest, I've heard a lot of bad things about sand, so I haven't bothered to use it, why risk an animals eating habits or worse, life on such an insignificant thing, I've used wood chippings (T-Rex of course) and have never ever had any problems, it looks nice too... just a thought and a suggestion..

Wood chips are as bad or worse then sand for a Bearded Dragon. It is just as prone to being swallowed. And wood chips hold more moisture and will affect your humidity level.

For a Bearded Dragon the best substrate is the cheap stuff IMO: newspaper, shelf lining, paper towels, all safe and dont mess with humidity levels
