Ah horse manure
Catchy thread title. I was watching an episode of dirtiest jobs on Discovery channel. They were making cast iron bells. The mold they made for it was made out of sand mixed with horse manure. They said it compacted very well and got quite hard. I'm wondering if this might work to mix in with a sand substrate to harden it up. I'm looking for volunteers to try it for me! If not I'll have to try it myself. I'm not sure if it would be too smelly after mixed and would attract insects though.

Re: Ah horse manure!
It would be smelly! Even composted manure has a distinctive odor!
And unless it was very thoroughly composted it will have all sorts of wonderful little organisms living in it.
Bugs, and fungus, and molds,... oh my!

Re: Ah horse manure!
Hmm. Very good point. I was thinking of trying the bagged stuff available from landscaping outlets. I'm not sure if they put it through any processes though because it's pretty cheap.

Re: Ah horse manure!
The bagged stuff has been at least partially composted. Otherwise it would get pretty nasty in that bag!

Re: Ah horse manure!
if you had live plants in there, you would then get very happy plants!

Re: Ah horse manure!
you could always use fresh manure and keep Dung beetles ( I have to puke now, lol)
That show almost made me sick when I watched the people who work in New York city underground sewer system, YUCK!

Re: Ah horse manure!
Haven't seen the episode but it sounds like they were using fresh manure, in which case I would pass.

Re: Ah horse manure!
Oh yeah I definitley wasn't going to use fresh stuff. But that's probably where the adhesive properties are.
