I'll be the first to say that ECP have won a place in the viv. I've used them as a dranage layer for Darts, T's and other wet land vivs. The down sides to using them alone is that they are very dusty when dry and let water run right past them. There best used for non burrowing species as a bottom layer with a filter system or sump tank and a top layer of subsrate.

i used reptile carpet for my red tail boa and loved it. nice and clean, easy to take out and change, and you can throw it right in the washing machine. you definitely made the right choice switching!
