Re: Breeding with snakes??
Well my idea is to get all types eventually but what I have heard and read most suggest starting with a corn.
I know its an expensive hobby. I am feeding An Ig and 4 Bearded Dragons at this stage. So I have decided to start breeding my own feeder insects for the Bearded Dragons cause the guys are really taking advantage of the reptile keepers over here. It costs about $40 per week to feed them alone without any special treats or veggies. I am so excited about getting it started. I cant think of anything else. So snakes do grow very quickly then. Thanks for the info.

Re: Breeding with snakes??
Snakes can grow very quickly but its not a real good idea. Some keepers subscribe to a practice known as powerfeeding to accelerate growth but it will take years off of the snake's lifespan.

Re: Breeding with snakes??
Also, size isn't as important as age for breeding. Some species shouldn't be bred until they are over 5 years old.
I think cornsnakes are probably the best to start with. Good luck. Here is the link to the HC cornsnake caresheet: http://reptileguides.herpcenter.com/...125.html?t=125 I would also recommend that you get some books on cornsnakes which will have breeding information, etc.

Re: Breeding with snakes??
Thank you very much for the information.
I was not worried about the size for breeding but the size for space required. I will definatly look into getting some books on corns. I will let you know as soon as I decide to get one or more ![]()

Re: Breeding with snakes??
Personally I'm a Ball Python person. Their are some amazing morphs out there. Plus there are two very dedicated breeders right in my area who are willing to help me start breeding a couple of snakes. I like the genetics part of it all, so thats the reason I want to get into breeding. Since snakes won't or can't breed unless healthy, then I have no choice even if I didn't want to care for them correctly. I think people who want to breed will take care of their pets, cuz theres really no other choice. Although there are ways to mess up badly, it's detrimental to the breeding program in the long run so really not worth the "short-cuts".
I wish you luck, and I hope you enjoy it. I believe you are up for the challange, as long as everything else in inorder. |

Re: Breeding with snakes??
As far as small snakes their are many that can be kept and breed with out much problem. A few boas come to mind, such as sand boas or rubber boas both stay under one meter and are just about as easy to keep as cornsnakes. If pythons are more your thing with a little more care Childrens pythons or Spotted pythons are also a smaller snake.
What ever you choose do a lot of reading beforehand. No snake is really breeding age before 3-4 years of age for females though males can be breed younger. I've breed corns for quite a time and sometimes still have a bit of trouble getting the littleones on their way. Always look at the market before incubating the eggs or breeding, if what your producing isn't needed you could be caring for 10-20 snakes for quite a while.
