I Need Identification Help
My cat loves to bring in snakes (live ones) through the dog door (as well as birds, squirrels, lizards, and bats....quite the hunter). He usually brings in little Texas blind snakes which I simply pick up and toss back outside. However, he just now brought in a snake that I have never seen before. It was about the size of the blind snakes, but was definitely a different snake. He was about six inches long and about 1/8 inch in diameter. He was silver, with a black head. He was pretty docile, didn't try to strike at all, and very slow moving.
I live in west Texas and my back fence backs up to a very brushy field. I wouldn't be concerned, but I have an infant son, and unidentified snakes loose in the living room is not a good thing. I like snakes (have 2 as pets, though they reside at my mothers house, since hubby is terrified of them), but I want to know what they are before they are welcome in the house.
Can anyone help on this one?

Re: I Need Identification Help
Welcome to HC, without a picture it would be nearly impossible for us to even try and identify.

Re: I Need Identification Help
I regretted not taking a picture of him as soon as I chunked him back outside. I was in such save him from Stanley (the cat) that I never even thought about it. I have no doubt that there will be another one. Like, I said, Stanley fancies himself quite the hunter. That said....does anyone need a cat? Those who don't like a fresh kill in the middle of the living room floor need not apply. Thanks for trying y'all.

I found him. It was a flathead snake.

Re: I Need Identification Help
nice one.... well basically the rule in the USA I think is...if it is not a coral snake, has no rattle or is not a pitviper it is safe
unfortunetly, the same cannot be said here!

Re: I Need Identification Help
Yeah, but we have some around here that are technically safe, but still mean. Coachwhips come to mind. Those things are some bitin' SOBs.

Re: I Need Identification Help
Agreed! Coachwhips are a look but don't touch snake!
They have serious attitude even from hatchlings!
Its a good thing that they aren't bigger!
