Heating Up Cool Side

I have a question about heating the cool sides of my snake tanks. The warm sides and basking spots are the right temps on all of them, but the cool sides are in the 70's when they should be in the low 80's. How can I warm them up without overheating the tanks?
I should point out that two of my tanks ate 10 gallons, as they have juvenile boas in them, and two of them are 40 gallon breeder tanks, housing boas as well. I don't want to heat up the water in the smaller tanks too much, so I'm not sure what I can do.
I also have a 10 gallon that is housing a small corn snake. I will take readings on this tank tomorrow and see if they are alright.

Re: Heating Up Cool Side

You can use a low wattage light bulb to bump the temps on the cool side up a few degrees. Just be careful that it doesn't make everything else too warm. Thats the problem with 10 gal tanks. They are hard to balance out.

Re: Heating Up Cool Side

When you say low wattage bulb, I assume you are talking about reptile bulbs??
I switched all my tanks over to aspen last night due to my ant problem, will that hold more heat that the cyprus did?

I don't use any of the reptile "basking bulbs". I just use regular household light bulbs.
The change to aspen really shouldn't affect your heat retention.

Re: Heating Up Cool Side

I personally buy GE reveal full spectrum bulbs, its about $4-$6 for a six pack, and home depot readily has availible, 40 watt, 60 watt, 75 watt and 100 watt bulbs. I mix them around until I get the right temps.

The standard old household lamps will run you about a buck for 4 of them in the usual wattagess (40,60,100.)
The smaller wattages will be a bit more since they aren't used as commonly but still way cheaper than those darned pet store bulbs.

Re: Heating Up Cool Side

yeah, it's few dollars more for the full spectrum type, but they provide white light, instead of the yellow from a standard bulb, purely asthetic though.
I agree about petstore bulbs though, there ridiculous.
