Snake for the Fall

hey guys, i'm starting to get some ideas on a snake I would want for the fall season. i was going to get a red tail but I didn't realize how insanely big a 9 foot snake really is hahaha.

so with that in mind i'm wanting to get a snake around the 5 foot range. i want a constricting type snake. the only snake I could really think of is a ball python wich isn't a bad choice(i love them!) but I just wanted to see what all my other options could be. i don't want to spend more then 250 on one so keep that in mind.

thanks for your time!!!

Re: Snake for the Fall

Glad you have realized red tail boa get BIG!! Not many people look into the future. A ball python is always a good choice and lots of people have experience with them...really good snakes and docile.

Is this your first snake? Blood pythons are also in the size range (but BIG snakes, as in size not length) but are known to be quite aggressive, but can be tamed down.

Re: Snake for the Fall

If you prefer a semi-arboral snake, check the Irian Jayas, also (Morelia spilota harrisoni). They stay around 5-6ft also. If and extra foot is ok, take a look at a jungle carpet python (Morelia spilota cheynei. The males don´t ususally get bigger than 6ft. Females may go up tp 7-8.

Or, if you have enough experience (and an extra buck to spend...) and you prefer an arboreal snake...look at green tree pythons (Morelia viridis)

Are you only thinking of boids? Cornsnakes and kingsnakes and bull snakes are constrictors as well and stay within your size criteria

Re: Snake for the Fall

I'd pitch in and say it might be good to start with the snakes Merlin suggested. They tend to be easier to care for, they stay small and they'll help you get used to dealing with a snake. But the ball python you were looking into is also good. Not as small, but usually they're pretty gentle in temperament.

As far as price goes, maybe you can find a local rescue and see what they have. I think buying them from a store, normal cornsnakes and ball pythons are probably the cheapest.

Re: Snake for the Fall

the fall season as in wanting to get one around october.

no I have no snake experince, my mom hates them and never let me have one and now moving out so I can finally get one. yay!

if boids are pythons and boas then yes, i'm not really interested in the colubrids.

Re: Snake for the Fall

You could get a hog island boa, but im sure they are much more expensive than what you are wanting to spend, and not that available lol. Id say with what you are wanting to spend, and your preferred full grown lenghth, a ball is your best bet.

Re: Snake for the Fall

yeah that's what i'm thinking, i took a look at the green tree python and I wouldn't be able to do one. seems like the ball, or a rosy/sand boa looks to be my best bets

Re: Snake for the Fall

Rosy boas are great. they stay small, generally around 2-3 1/2 feet. 4 feet is a big one for that type. they like a dry environment, like temps in the 80s and are pretty docile. a big key for them too is to keep low humidity.

i have one that I adore. i've had him for over 3 years now he's the best to have when you just want to have a snake to lounge around with. one thing about him though, which many snakes do anyways, is he goes off of food for the winter for about 6 months. drove me crazy at first but now I expect it.

just something else to think about. they come in a few different types that are really pretty.

Re: Snake for the Fall

yeah my girlfriend has one and she is doing the saaammme exact thing. she hasn't eaten since the middle of october and it's driving her up the walls. we think she just got out of brumation because she shed and pooped. we know she isn't sick because it was a healthy shed. she tried feeding her a couple of days after that but she still didn't eat. it was even a live pinky and she didn't show any interest what so ever.
