Some people have said thats its not a good idea to have Eugeen (our red clawed crab) in the aquarium where Fella (the garter snake) can get in but they seem to be cohabitting fine, they've bumped into each other a few times when the snake has been swimming round like a loon with his mouth open in hunt mode but he's not attacked the crab and the crab hasn't reacted, also the snake has been face to face smelling with his tongue with the crab backed into a corner and the crab didn't even drop his pea to defend himself, is this normal? should we still be weary? or are we just lucky to have such peaceful animals? be nice if it was the later

I have never heard of a snake eating a crab, so I can't say the snake is much of a threat 100%. I suppose it could happen if the crab were small enough.

On the other hand, the crab could grab onto the snake if he suddenly does feel threatened.

The fact that they are cohabitating well now doesn't mean it will remain that way. There are many threads that list people having placed 2 animals together and they got along great. Suddenly, one morning they get up and one of the 2 is missing, injured, or deceased.

No one is able to say if their current relationship will continue uninterrupted.

I personally wouldn't house them together. Aside from the potential future risk to your snake, crabs are actually best kept in brackish water habitats. Garter snakes are not. And although a garter snake would not normally try to eat a crab, they hunt by scent/taste, not by site. So if the crab ever happens to smell fishy, he may end up being attacked.
