Tree Snake
I was just wondering if anyone could tell me of a docile aboreal snake. I want something fairly large and colorful that can be tamed fairly easily. I'm building an arboreal cage as we speak. Thanks!

Re: Tree Snake
Amazon tree boas are considered a "practice snake" for the eventual green tree python or emerald tree boa. They're not quite as nippy and can be docile if worked with at an early enough age. They are gorgeous snakes. I almost picked one up last week, but I came to my senses...;-). Make sure if you decide this snake by be for you that you look into who is selling it and the temperament of the snake in question. They can be testy...just not as bad as the others mentioned.

Re: Tree Snake
Rough Green Snakes are great in captivity. They are not colorful in the sense that they are multi-colored, but they are a very pretty green. Also, they eat crickets, so the are very easy to keep.

Re: Tree Snake
I would say that Carpet pythons are a good starter for an aboreal snake though some species can get very long up to 12 foot. The Jungle Carpet stays relitivly small as due Bredi's Carpet python. And are easier to handle as adults. I've just never seen a Amazon Tree Boa that didn't want to take a bit at me.

Re: Tree Snake
I would also advise against the rough greens for a beginner.
These are entirely wild caught and even experienced keepers have had trouble keeping them going more than a year or two.

Re: Tree Snake
If you are new to arboreal snakes, I would go with an Amazon tree boa. Do a lot of research, no arboreal snake is easy per say. Every arboreal snake I have come near has taken a shot at me, so I am not a huge fan of them. Believe it or not, corn snakes love to climb, as to black rats, they are not going to form the little ball on a tree branch you are probably looking for, but you are much less likely to get bit.

Re: Tree Snake
My personal experience in keeping arboreal snakes is with Asian vine snakes, Ahaetuella prasina. They're not very large though, and they're not constrictors. They max out at around 6 feet long, but are not much thicker than a pen. They're also rear-fanged colubrids that hunt by site and prey almost exclusively on small lizards and tree frogs. But they're gorgeous snakes and easily kept and tamed if you ask me. The venom's not that strong, and you can probably teach them to accept mice, though I find it difficult since scenting works poorly on a site-oriented snake.
If you get an Amazon tree boa, definitely go with captive-bred. I assume the ones I worked with were wild-caught, and they loved to bite!
