Mites

i just came back from a few day vacation to my poor cornsnakes with mites.
i was just curious if I anyone here knows of any good remedies to fix my situation. i got back this morning at 3 am and pretty much freaked out. This morning I decided to try and bath the snakes. i submerged both of them under water water (entire body but not nostrils) for a good amount of time and managed to remove all the mites I could find. i had another aquarium sitting around so I cleaned it and layered it with paper towel instead of a substrate. I have heard that it easier to moniter because of the white bottom. i am going to give the old terrarium a good cleaning with water downed bleach before I even consider putting them back in.

I called a local pet store and they said they used baby oil on their snakes to smother the mites when they had an infestation in the store. i was wondering I any one has tried tis and if it works. Ill probably end up going to a reptile specialist to get a spray that apparently irradicates the mites, but ive also heard the sprays can be armful to the snakes because they dehydrate or them or something along those lines. Today is sunday so not many places are open,

sorry for the long post im just very concerned any and all help is appreciated but please ony post if it is a technique that you are quite certain will work or ave had a similar experience thanks again...

Re: Mites

Theres an "all natural" mite spray you can get at most petstores such as petco or petsmart. You can spray your snakes down with this and it is safe, Ive used it on my boas before. Using a bleach/water mixture is fine for the enclosure, make sure you clean all the hides and water bowl as well. And rinse out the enclosure until you cant smell the bleach anymore. Good luck

Re: Mites

Mites are a pain! Keep the tank spartan with just paper and a hide and water bowl. Throw out, or thoroughly disinfect, any furnishings in the old tank.
The less in there, the less places for mites to lay eggs and hide.
The oil is only a quick knock down and will not prevent the return. You need to kill all the mites and eggs. If any survive it will start all over.
The best safest treatment I know of to use is Reptile Relief By Natural Chemistry. You can use it both on the animal as well as the enclosure.

Re: Mites

i finally found a mite remedy today id kind of rediculous that so many stores dont stock something like this but none the less I found one. I could not find the reptile relief but I did find one called Mite off, its manufactured by zoomed. do you know how long it takes for the stuff to work? i have all the snakes in "isolation" now as suggested with a hide and water dish that is all. i have been checking on them quite often just through the course of the day and already it seems their state has greatly improved. i can still find the odd mite tht is still alive though and also suspect there are still some under the scales on one of the snakes. Ive been advised only to apply the spray once every 3 days until the mites are totally eradicated. i have disinfected the vivs and the furniture with bleach and water... you have no idea how badly I want tings to return to normal
