Do your kids have snakes?
I'm just wondering how many of your kids have pet snakes- and HOW OLD THEY ARE.
My son got a snake for his 2nd birthday- I of course am the one that takes care of it. She's up on his dresser in a locked cage. He helps me clean her water dish and fill it up, then he stands on the stepstool while I put it back in her cage and he holds her for a little bit. Its a baby rosy boa.
I'm just curious to see if other people have pets for thier kids and how old they are...

Re: Do your kids have snakes?
My snakes instantly become partial property of my 10 year old daughter. I feed and clean, but she takes them out as much as I do. My 13 year old and my wife are indeferent to them.

Re: Do your kids have snakes?
I would say that the snakes are a joint effort between Sean and I. Sean is 13 and got his first snake (corn) two years ago for Christmas (has it only been that long). We now have 8 (and one that we have for care about half the year). We both clean, feed and handle them.

Re: Do your kids have snakes?
My kids do have snakes, but because of the fear everyone (not the kids, other people) reacted with when the kids were little, we didn't have any house snakes until about 7 years ago. The kids and I had "outdoor" snakes. The common snakes to the area that lived under our porch, but would let us handle them. My grandchildren absolutely love the snakes and lizards, and they range in age from 1 year to 13 years. None of them currently have snakes that live with them, so they come here. My sister-in-law works at a daycare, and once a year or so I take the snakes there and explain to the kids how a snakes body works, and how to handle them. We do a little presentation and explain that wild snakes should stay outside, then we do a little handling. I have also taken them to the high school to a few classes and explained to them what it takes to handle and keep snakes. I have discouraged kids entering college from getting snakes, as they cannot keep them in the dorms, and most of their moms don't want to take care of them. I always supervise all handling of the reptiles by my grandkids, and make sure they wash good before and after.

Thats awsome! We're well on our way to 100 snakes... we've currently got... (counting)... 25...28... something...
And we have at LEAST 7 more planned for the coming year... (and those don't count the rescue animals...)
my son is always supervised as well (obvioulsy), he was just totally infatuated with the little rosy when she came in so we let him keep her... he really likes one of our big peruvian red tails too... but shes too big for him, she drags the ground on both sides when she's across his shoulders... pretty cute....
glad to see other kids have snakes.... glad I started mine so young- he gets so excited when I bring the step stool in to change her water every nite- its the bed time ritual.... and the most spoiled snake we own...

Re: Do your kids have snakes?
Sounds like your snake is well loved. Just watch your son with the reptiles to be sure he doesn't get hurt or afraid, or drop the snake (my granddaughter who is now 6 likes to drop the ball python on her mom's lap, her mom screams really good!).

Re: Do your kids have snakes?
as far as having snakes that are personally theirs,, I would have to say NO. We do rescue so they have had a ton in and out of here,, the youngest three take an active interest in the rescue with the snakes but the oldest one is so absorbed in his own life at the moment he could care less. I only have one permanent resident in here as his temperment is too nasty to be "adoptable". There are only two others in here at the moment they are allowed to even handle. The others are too touchy to be trusted.
So all in all Yes they have been around and an active part with snakes their whole lives,, but they have none that are quote, their own.

Re: Do your kids have snakes?
My kids dont personally have a snake, but my daughter(4) and my son(1) play with all of mine with extreamly close supervision... Right now they have a burm in a locked cage in their closet, and locks on the closet doors (double locks better the odds of a snake not ecsaping, and we have no where else for a cage that size) My daughter has a learning disability and its been very good therapy for her having our burm in there... On a rough day, she will sit in her room alone and talk to the snake through the glass(we leave the closet doors open during the day)... so if you ask my daugher if she has a snake, she says yup and drags you to her room to see (Im sure you can guess how the gramas feel about that one).... She also helps bathe the snake when she gets her "you messed your enclosure bath" and brings me the garbage can when I clean out the cage.... and helps towel dry her....

Re: Do your kids have snakes?
Unfortunately when my kids were small I WAS married to a woman who was totally horrified by anything reptilian or bug like and refused to even consider having anything like that around. (should have been my first clue that it wasn't going to "work out"!)
Now I am with a lovely lady who shares my love of all creatures. And we are passing it on to our Grandkids.
So much so, that both their mothers live in terror that Grandma and Grandpa will show up some birthday or Christmas with a box with air holes in it.
Of course I would never do anything like THAT!
MUHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA!
