Snakes of my Country/State

Hi,

I decided to start this thread identifying the snakes that exist in Portugal. I think it would be interesting to exchange this kind of info among the members of HC.

If you think that also, please reply with the snakes we may find in your country (or State, specially considering the countries with lots of snakes - US and Brazil come to mind...).

So, this is what I found (some names may have changed and the info may not be exact, but it´s a fair try..):

PORTUGAL

- Vipera latastei (Lataste's viper, snub-nosed viper);
- Vipera seonaei (Baskian viper)

- Natrix natrix (European Grass Snake or Ringed Snake)
- Natrix maura (Viperine Snake or False viper)

- Malpolon monspessulanus (Rat snake or Montpellier snake)
- Macroprotodon cucullatus (Hooded snake)
- Elaphe scalaris (Ladder snake)
- Coronella girondica (Southern Smooth Snake)
- Coronella austriaca (Smooth snake)
- Coluber hippocrepis (Horseshoe Whipsnake)

waiting for your inputs

Regards
João

Interesting thread Joao..

Here in England we only have 3 native snakes, they are as follows..

Coronella austriaca - Smooth Snake
Natrix natrix - Grass Snake
Vipera berus - Adder

Don't really have the weather in the UK for snakes lol

Many of ours have specialized territories and aren't in extensive numbers. Garters and Ribbons are easy to find.
