    Fire Skink Substrate

    hi everyone

I have 2 fire skinks and have had them for nearly a year now.

I have always used bark for a substrate but would like to try something different.

So is anyone using different substrate and if so what?

I have had a look online at some images and saw that a skink owner was using sand??????? didn't think that this could be used for them and thought it might be bad for there eyes as they burrow alot, thought it might irritate them. Is anyone using sand and how is it going?

Also what bark if this is what your are using do you buy? has anyone ever brought the big bags of bark from the garden centres? if sterilize steralise it before you use it?

    Thanks all

    Fire Skink Substrate

Keepers should use soil with mulch or sphagnum as a substrate and should be moderately moist. It should never be dry or soggy. Moisten the substrate once daily so approximate 70-80% ground humidity is maintained.

Coconut husk retains moisture extremely well and can be used as part of a mixture for this purpose.
You shouldn't use sand regardless of what images you saw using it. The coconut husk is a good choice.
