supple skink
Hi,
any bros here keeping skinks? i wasnt sure which sub-thread should it belong to so I posted here first. i found a 4-5cm one near my hostel. kept him for a couple of days. try small ants as possible food but was rejected. didnt have pin head with me so I gave him a bigger one(hind legs removed), he immediately grabbed the crix by the head and managed to swallow it even though it was bigger!!! scary anyone got more information on this common skink? cause I cant seem to get more information of the net cheers |

Hi,
I have a Blue-tongued Skink. I don't know a lot about any of the other skinks but 4-5 cm is too small for the BT. You could probably safely try any small insect including snails and also small berries. Last resort would be soaked dog food or mouse pinkies. Where is your hostel located? Can you get pics? |

I was able to find this: http://www.ecologyasia.com/verts/liz...pple_skink.htm
and also this: http://wildthailandphotos.com/shortl...ink.thumbs.htm and this: http://www.wildsingapore.per.sg/disc...kinksupple.htm Now, this skink doesn't seem too unique in appearance or habits. My guess would be that you should set them up with a general small terrestrial lizard habitat...a forest floor type bedding, one they can easily burrow in, and lots of low, close hiding spaces (at least 2 hide caves or boxes). I'm guessing they require a moderate humidity level, just use the average humidity near the hostel. I'd go with a 75 cool side and 88 hot spot, as being pretty safe, unless it's cooler there than I imagine. Turn off heating at night. Most likely this skink will eat snails, slugs, earthworms, beetles, woodlice, and similar insects. In captivity tiny crickets, mealworms, waxworms, or even fly larvae might be acceptable for it. Attractive-looking little guy. ![]() |

hey thanks wolf and esbat,
what is BT anyway?? currently in a plastic tank with no substrate and several rocks as hiding places. i'm from asia so no worries about the temperature. yup, thanks for the pic, its a Bowrings' supple skink. haha not very eye catching but a closer look will expose its nice side colouration. since its maximum size isnt so big I shall house him in my hostel. will do up a tropical setup for him. (shall update you people then) hes onto crickets but I think one will last him a couple of days since hes so small now. appreciate all the input. thanks!!! ![]() |

You'll still need to make sure that he has access to a basking area, so even though he's native there, he'll need some type of heating. Reptiles regulate their temperature by moving from warm to cool areas--in a cage, you have to provide them with options. The constant temperature inside your home may not be warm enough.
A juvenile lizard should be offered food every day. Try to keep food items small enough that they can be easily swallowed--if he has to struggle to get it down, it's too big. |

You should try to find insects that are more its size. Feeding bugs that are too big are a hazard.

Most skinks around here like to spend time scurrying around in leaf litter and under rocks. Their smooth pointed heads make them expert burrowers. I would think your skink would like to have something to dig in. Perhpas shredded newspaper for a cleaner alternative to dirt.
