Do I Have It All Right for a Bts?

hi , on saturday I'm going to the rocky mtn reptile expo to get a blue tongue skink.so i have his/her new home all set up, its a 10 gallon with aspen substrate, a small heat pad on one side , a basking side with a flat river rock , and a large shallow water bowl. i have one digital thermometer with the probe on the basking rock, it fluctuates from 95-98f. the humidity stays between 30-40%. at night i will have only the heat mat on and it will be off during the day. does it sound good? its never below 65 in my house and i read on blue tongue skinks.net that it should be colder at night , but not colder than 60. so that is why i would have only the heat mat on at night. thanks for any advice!

Congrats on getting a skink they are fun. I would think you are getting a baby cause that tank size is a little small. Better be ready to invest in a bigger one as it grows.
Otherwise it sounds good. Unless I forgot anything? Make sure you feed a varied diet. Post pictures when you get him/her!

Oh yeah - provide a hide.

Hopefully someone can string together my posts, lol. OOPS
Anyway maybe I misread this but the heat mat and basking spot is on the same side? You should have a hot side and a cool one, which is hard to provide in a 10 gallon.

Re: Do I Have It All Right for a Bts?

thanks, and yes i plan on getting a baby , ill move him/her into a 40gallon in a few months, then a 4.5 by 2 in a year . i have a hide on the cool side. the heat lamp is on the basking side on top of a flat rock. the heat mat is on the cool side but it will be unplugged at daytime, at night i will turn the lamp off and turn the mat on so that when he is in his hide he will be warmer. also do you feed yours cat food? is this ok for the protein part of the diet? along with a pinkie every once in a while? are there any catfood brands you would recommend? thanks for the help

Okay other members will have to help with this: put your Under Tank Heater on a thermostat for the night time use. My temps don't go below 68-70 in my house so I have no need for heat at night. But a regular Under Tank Heater won't give you a lower temp. drop at night.
I don't feed catfood. I feed mixed fresh greens with cooked chicken. Sometimes mealworms, supers. Sometimes a frozen thawed fuzzy.
There are some catfoods that are okay, it's just better for me to do it this way. I have other reptiles that eat a mixture of greens and I always keep cooked shredded chicken cause my dog eats it with his medicine. lol
I would recommend Spot's Stew if i had to ,lol.
Remember to post pics when you get him.

Congrats on your new Blue Tongue Skink. We just got one a few weeks ago. She is 8 months old right now & in a 29 gallon. We plan to get a bigger one this summer. They grow quick at first. I would like to get a combination water bowl & hide. I saw a large one on a website before but they were out. Anyone want to sell one?

I hope that you are not planning on housing them together. Blueys are one of those "one lizard to an enclosure" type of animals.

A bigger skink or a bigger tank? LOL
I believe that person got a snake instead of a Blue Tongue Skink.

LOL I read it too quickly!
I thought she meant a bigger skink!
I need to stop trying to do so many things at once!
