Since fire skinks can get just over a foot long, you'll need a 20 gal at minimum, but twice that size would be better. Fire skinks, like most lizards, will need UVB lighting too. Like many skinks, they're omnivorous. Feed'em bugs, but also greens, fruits, and veggies, like collards, kale, peas, pear, etc. Keep fruit to a minimum though. Day gradient: 75-85 F, night: 65-75 F, basking: 90-95 F, humidity: 75-85%. Substrate, Bed-a-beast, Reptibark, coconut husk, soil, etc. I think you know the rest, hides, feeding, etc. Oh, and most skinks can actually be tamed to accept being handleda little, though you must be careful, they're very quick to drop their tails. They're also fast when they wanna be, and would make a tasty snack for a cat if he got out of your hands. Skinks can also bite, HARD.

Thats what I thought bout cage size. I knew bout pretty much everything else. I found 3 pretty decent caresheets so that helped the only thing they really didnt cover cage size though. Im seriously thinkin bout finding new homes for my toads and then using the 20 long for the skink and then eventually getting one of those screen reptariums for him once I get things set up better.

What's the reptarium like? If its all screen, I wouldn't use it. They like a nice deep substrate for burrowing and an all screen cage would make that rather messy. Oh, and just make sure the caresheets are for the fire skink and not the red-sided skink (Mabuya perrotetii), which is sometimes sold under the same name. As for the fire's scientific name, the species is fernandi, but I can't seem to find a concrete genus. It's been placed in Mochlus, Lygosoma, and Riopia, but I don't know which one is the current one.

Yes I know about the skinks classification and im pretty sure its currently Riopa Fernandi

Reptariums are screen but u can also get a liner called a Softray for the bottom...

What's A Softray?
Softrays are a great way to hold substrates and liquids within your reptarium®. Made of a soft, safe, and clear heavy-duty vinyl material - Softrays provide a method of holding substrate or water up to 4 or 5 inches deep. They can be used with most heat pads and are available either in long , tall, or flat for almost all reptarium sizes.

OK, then a screen cage would work. I'd still go with a tank though. It's gonna be a pain in the @ss to keep the humidity high enough in an all-screen cage.

Ah thats where my idea comes in, I have a plastic drop cloth that I can use on the outside of 3 edges to hold in the humidity.

Ill hopefully have my 20 long but dont know if I can afford a bigger "tank" thats why I got the idea for the reptarium.

well im going for it, im gonna tote the toads to petsmart in hopes that they will take them and possibly give me a discount on the skink as he has been there for as long as I can remember. Im gonna call tomorrow to see if they still got him and make sure he is in good condition.

Do you think it would be ok to hold off on the UV bulb for a short while? not very long at all?

Eh, I'd wait until you can afford to get all the equipment you need before you get your skink. The skink will survive without the UVB bulb for quite a while, but it won't be good for him, and you'd pretty much intentionally be denying him something he needs to survive. Also, you sure you wanna give your toads to Petsmart? I mean, they were your first herps. Ain't there anything better than a Petsmart you could get for them? I'm sure there's some responsible people who woud love to adopt them if you don't want them anymore, or maybe even pay for them.

Ill go get a nother clamp lamp and the uv lamp next week after I get my workstudy check. I know it wasnt quite the right thing to do but I brought Togo home tonight without the light, i couldnt wait any longer it was makin me so excited that I couldnt sleep for the past few nights. He is sleeping right now on top of his lava rock under the IR bulb. As for the toads im gonna keep 2 of them if I can and sell the others to a friend who said that he would take them. One toad is MIA and dont know where he went.
