Re: Baby Fire Skinks

Your fire skinks are adorable! I've had one for about 2 months, and haven't seen much literature on them... Any tips about determining the sex?

Re: Baby Fire Skinks

Sexing Fire Skinks isn't like sexing other lizards. Most male lizards have hemipenal buldges. Fire Skinks do not. The main way of sexing Fire Skinks is based on head size and shoulder width, which is not an exact science. They can also be probed, but that too won't be 100% accurate as the probe can stop at 5 or 6 scales and that can be indictive of both sexes. If you probe however and it goes in more than 9 scales, it is a male.

If you house multiple skinks, and 2 of them are agressive toward each other, you just found 2 males. These animals have no problems living together, but males will fight. As such, agressive tendencies between 2 of these little guys is a good sign that 2 males are being housed together.

My 4 little guys are still not large enough to try and sex yet. I will be able to make more comparison charecteristics once these little guys reach 8 inches or so.

Re: Baby Fire Skinks

Yeah mine's not very old either. It's not really a problem because he (I call him he for arguments sake) lives on his own, I was just curious as to whether there was any way I could see. Not planning on breeding so I reckon I'll leave (him!) to it!
