Re: Thinking of Buying a Skink...
The different species of skink can vary a lot in care requirements, availability, temperament, size, price, and appearance. A lot depends more specifically on what you hope to get out of owning one, what you are willing to provide for one, and what you can afford.
Few skinks are good for handling, but blue-tongued skinks aren't too bad for that. You'll find most people will probably suggest those if you want to be able to hold your skink. They can be pricey though, have a more complicated diet, and need a larger habitat. They're not that fast or agile compared to the small ones though. Most of the smaller ones are pretty much just for looking at, and they may be wild-caught. They're also much quicker. My all-time favorite is the Solomon island monkey-tailed skink (prehensile-tailed skink), but they're even more complicated than the blue-tongues and more expensive.

Re: Thinking of Buying a Skink...
I have a Schneider's Skink (Eumeces schneideri). They sound maybe somewhere along the lines of what your looking for. Their handleable, but you do have to limit the amount of handling, they are an arid species, and are relativly inexpensive. ($25-$40 maybe)
Though if you get one do try to get one captive breed, its worth it. There is some good information about them online, try googling them.
