Sand in a Schneider tank

I hear alot of mixed opinions on sand in lizard enclosure's. I hear many people that think sand should not be used, because of risk of compaction, but I also hear that Schneider Skinks need sand in there there habitat to be healthy, I know mine loves burrowing aroound in the sand. I use the Clay mix substate that hardens up for the main part of the enclosure, but I have very thin layer around the Enclosure, and two spots, the inside of one of his hide's, and A depression at the base of his "tree" where I have T-Rex BONE AID Calci-Sand, the bag says it's 100% digestable, but I wanted to ask around here, I don't really want him to not have the spots to burrow, but I dont want to risk him getting impacted.

Re: Sand in a Schneider tank

Contrary to what the bag says it is not 100% digestable. Many of the impaction cases can be linked to Calci sand.
If you stop and think about it,...calci sand is comprised of the same material used in antacid medications. In other word it neutralizes stomach acids! So by swallowing quantities of the stuff it is actually reducing the stomache's ability to digest anything, including the sand. And since many lizards will lick calcium as a part of their foraging, having a calcium sand substrate actually encourages them to consume it.

Re: Sand in a Schneider tank

Are there any Safe types of sand out there I could purchase. I don't really have a problem removing the sand, but I know he enjoys burrowing so much id feel bad doing it.

If you insist on having sand, the best to use is washed playsand from home depot or lowes. make sure it has no silica dust. also make sure you sift it several times to remove any pebbles or rocks

Re: Sand in a Schneider tank

yeah, id personaly rather just take all the sand out, He spends a good part of the day buried in it, but every care sheet i've read on them says they prefer sand, and I can tell he likes having it in there. I'll check home depot. Thanks.
