Croc skinks: you are all creepy
So a few months after our female died I removed the background and found an old, dried up croc skink egg we hadn't noticed. Strange. Didn't develop at all, in a bad spot...weirdness.
Tonight, after a check of my reptiles (pretty thorough as I just got back from a 4 day trip) I noticed in the ol' croc skink cage, with just an apparent male in it, an egg! This isn't any normal ol egg- it was in the middle of the cage, no cover at all!! To make things even more strange, there was nothing inside it and a break at the front- it had HATCHED! The shell is still soft, so it had to have been within that last day or two, likely 24 hours. I did a VERY thorough search of every single little thing in the enclosure, TWICE. No baby. So the skink that didn't die of egg complications (aka our male) layed an egg that later hatched to reveal no baby or cannibalism in a species known for strong parental care.
Croc skinks are officially creepy.
