Spike Update
Took the little guy to the vet. I have a wonderful exotic vet only minutes away. He says it's most likely a bacterial infection which can be bad in guys this little. I'm injecting him with antibiotic for the next 7 days and crossing my fingers that he gets better.
Poor little guy.
Everyone is laughing cause this is a $15 dollar turtle that I just spent $75 dollars on getting him treated... but... seriously.... I couldn't just do nothing. I couldn't just let the little guy die without doing something. At least now he has a chance!!!
Keep Spike in your thoughts!

And he thanks you for this view. Its not about how much the animal cost, its about how big your heart is for the animal.

Re: Spike Update
Good luck with Spike!
Tell your friends to go take a long hike!
Its not supposed to be about the cost of the animal, but the quality of life that you can give it.
Years ago I paid 12 dollars for a cornsnake and ended up paying 160 bucks in Vet bills less than a month later.
The snake is still with me!

Re: Spike Update
thanks guys!! you're all too sweet!
Yea this is a big expensive week for me now. I need to get my mom's dog neutered and get all three dogs updated on vaccinations.
AND I need to make my deposit on my study abroad trip to Turkey!
Did I mention that I quit my job? Nursing school is tough stuff and it's impossible to find time to work 30-40 hours a week and read 400 pages. So I work at a groomer now once or twice a week to not be completely broke and support my animals
This month is putting me in the red. But I love these little guys more than anything!!! I'd do anything for 'em!

Re: Spike Update
Congrats on knowing what you need to do and just doing it. You would not believe the neglect I've seen because people just dont think that their animal is worth the money.

Re: Spike Update
after the reptile convention (last weekend) I've been seeing SOOOO MANY reptiles on craiglist. It's KILLING me not to take them all in.
We do have plans to get a Redfooted Tortoise in the future! We saw a few at the show and they're GORGEOUS! My boyfriend wanted a sulcata and I spent all of Saturday explaining why that'd be a bad idea (it's going to get bigger than me. It's going to eat more the dogs combined, it's going to need a place to dig and we like backyards, it's going to have to live inside in the winter cause we live in Chicago) They seriously shouldn't sell those things up here!!! lol...
But Spike is still hanging in there. He doesn't look too thrilled. I've been soaking him a little cause he doesn't really move and then putting him back on his little basking rock under the light. I don't want him to get cold so I'm leaving his light on for the night. (The other tank had a heater for the water... this one doesn't since it's a QT tank... and actually is only a small tupperware container). Tomorrow morning is going to be my first injection! I'm a little nervous because his foot is SO SMALL. But as a good nursing student, I feel like I'm up to the challenge
