new newt home

Hi. I want to know if I can take plexiglass and section off a 3rd of my newt tank to make a land area. Will it work and is 6 1/2 inches of water deep good?
They live in a 10 gallon. I would hang fake plants from the land area for them to get in and out of the water along with floating lilly pads and logs etc. Also should I make the land a little higher then 6 1/2 inches so that when I put the frozen water bottles in to keep the temps down that it wont over flow into the land?

What type of newt are you talking about? I use to have a 20-gallon tank with a ten gallon tank in the middle and they would go from land to water. The depth of the water will depend on the size of the newt.
