Awesome amphibian, but I'm afraid what you've got there is a mudpuppy ( Necturus maculosus), not a hellbender. They're awesome anyway though, but they can't breathe outside of water, which is why they have those external gills.

A hellbender won't have gills, and will be a lot more wrinkly. Plus the head is a bit different, and they lack the black stripe near the snout. Although eastern hellbenders are patterened, its more muted than that of the mudpuppy, with much less distinct spots.

tank
you are correct ! this is a mudpuppy, thanks for the help, we had a tank made up for her its 45 gallon and will contain life from her home water only, as its winter here we did get rocks, gravel ,two crayfish and a few small sunfish, we used plastic plants for now and will add more stuff as weather permits, These are pretty neat critter she has settled in and eats worms , raw fish and guessing anything slower then her....here is a pic

Hello,
Thanks for the ID Matt. I would have gone on thinking it was a hellbender! As already noticed I am sure, I am not up to par on the amphibian world. How large do mudpuppies get?

Nice pics. Mudpuppies grow around 8-13 or so inches.
