![]() i had 3 cynops orientalis (chinese firebellies) in there back when I kept newts. I dont have them anymore but another pair I had before them bred for me pretty easily. Actually it was a mistake, i walked in one day to find eggs. But it was fun anyways. Cute little newts

The above tank looks pretty good. I keep about 1/4th of the tank land area though for mine, because some individuals tendto be a little more terrestrial than others. Make sure you've got a lid, as they can be good escape artists. Also, try and keep the water temperature under 70 degrees F.

what matt said I are the two main problems I had. Two of the three newts I had escaped and were found dried up on the carpet. To this day I have no idea how they got out.
Then there was keeping the water temp low enough. The flourescent tube provided a beautiful white light but too much heat. you just have to wing it I reckon.

I don't use any lighting on mine, and just rely on nearby lights to keep the tank somewhat lit. I use a screen lid because its good for ventillation, but also keeps the temperature from building up in the tank. I refill the tank with cold water, and if I have to, I put in a plastic bottle full of ice. A nice trick is to keep two bottles like that. Keeping one in the tank, and switching it with the one in the freezer when it melts.

yea I tried using the bottles, getting a screen top, and eventually I stopped using the lights. Nothing really worked.
the main problem was the AC kept conkin out on us, and in the middle of summer it wasnt very pleasent. lol.

Hi. Thanks for the help. I got two last night. I will try to get pictures tonight. Their water is only 50 degrees. I will check the temps again today. 50 degrees is to low right? Should I get a heater for them? Just for the winter. I read that the water should be 68 degrees in the day and 60 degrees at night. I am going to move them to the herp room tonight. It is in the 60's in there will that be enough? I have researched them. I am feeding them newt pellets and brine shrimp. One didn't eat anything do you think that it is because of the move? I have a fish tank hide and a little floating lilly pad. Also a little float with live plants sticking out of it and hanging into the water and rocks for the bottom the kind for fish tanks. And some live and fake plants inside of the tank. The one that did eat doesn't want to comeout of the water. If I put him out he just jumps right back in. Is that normal? I will post pictures as soon as I can.

Some newts are more terrestiral than others, and some are more aquatic. It depends entirely on the individual. As far as not eating...it's very normal, and your lucky to get the one to eat the first night at your house.
Mine were fed frozen bloodworms, sinking newt pellets, and frozen brine shrimp. Floating food never got eaten, only if the food sunk to the bottom was it ever eaten. 50 degrees actually isnt too bad, firebelly breeders put their newts into a cooling at 40 degrees. They can tolerate very low temps. If it stays that way for too long though you might want to get a submersible aquarium heater and set it at 60 degrees.

Yeah, it sounds pretty god to me. As said, 50 isn't bad, but 60 is better. I don't like to let mine get too close to 70.
