worms!

i have them again! once before, i got some newts from petsmart and I was surprised a few weeks later to find thin little worms in the tank! They look just like thin little pieces of fishing line. The newts were gotten rid of and I started anew with totally new tank, newts from a company in california...and everything! now they are BACK! they range from very evry short to almost 1/4-1/2 inch long. They wriggle around in the tank and climb up the glass. No way to take a pic of them thouigh but can someone please tell me if they are harmful to my newts?!? i have had the worst of luck with these little pests.

HELP!

Are they kinda whitish clear with maybe a tiny tiny black head? Unfortunately, I think you're are a parasite that are actually coming out of the newts themselves. I've seen it before. None of the newts survived

that's the best picture I could take....the worms are the little white dots on the glass.....they are whiter then these other thinner longer ones that I found next to them....they wouldn;t show up in the pic though they are too clear.

no black heads, just thin whitish little devils! i hate them! grr!

Hmm, yeah, they look too small to be what I thought they might have been. The tiny black heads on the others gave them away as maggots rather than worms.

Whether your's are a parasite or just an annoying stowaway I'm not sure. You haven't seen them on the newts at all? How about in the gravel or on the plants?

i do not see them on the newts and they were not on them when I had them last time. I disturbed the gravel by pouring water in the tank and afetr a few seconds, i saw them wriggling around in the water so I guess they are in the gravel, they were last time, i don't see them on the plants, but that does not mean that they are not on the plants or the newts.

i think I had those im my fishtank, and was told its from over feeding so maybe try feeding them less or removing uneaten food after they've eaten, and for my fish tank I was told to change the water and clean everything, i was told there harmless to the fish im not sure if its the same case for newts

Ok, now I think I'm getting a better idea of what they are. I've seen small, whitish clear worms that live in tanks before. What I think you have there is nothing very serious. They'll eat organic material, in your case, probably newt poo. However, I'm not sure if they're worms or maggots though. If they're a maggot of some kind, then they'll eventually turn into a gnat of some sort, most likely. I don't think they're a direct threat to your newts though, but that doesn't mean I can't be wrong.

those worms are actually very common in setups especially with organic substrate. they're rampant in numbers especially in warmer temperature. anyway my small paddle frogs used to enjoy globbing them up, but I think you have done the correct thing, if not they will jus expand in numbers and IF they happento die equally fast, will enhance the growth of bacteria in the tank.

Well, i have been having troubles trying to keep the tank temperature down...and I fed a lot more than I usually would before I went on vacation. So, hopefully they are just harmless worms and will help me a little bit in keeping the excess food and waste level down. I have also seen what looks like baby snails with clear shells so I think they are responding to the higher temps and the organic waste. I'll clean the tank really good and see what happens

thanks a bunch,
