Fire Belly Newt Setup and Cost?

Hey everyone! I found a 10-gal at Value Village for cheap, and I'm looking for some fire bellied newts to put in it. I'm just curious as to what sort of setup to give them.
What I know is 1/3 land and 2/3 water, but how can I achieve this? Will floating docks work? My mind can't wrap itself around the whole "land in an aquatic setup" kind of thing. Also, how deep should the water be?

I'm also wondering about the price of things. From what I understand, they need:
    Aquarium filter [$20]
    Water heater (???) [$20]
    Humidity + Temp gages [$5]
    Substrate (rocks/gravel) [$5]
    Water plants/plastic plants [$10]
    Hiding area

Is that all I need? I estimate about...
And if anyone can post pics of their enclosures that would be super.

Re: Fire Belly Newt Setup and Cost?

what i did was dump gravel into the tank and slope it up so it was half and half. then i put slate over the gravel so he could get dry. they do not need heaters, they actually will die if the water is over 78. They enjoy a water temp of low 60's, but tolerate up to around 70-72. once you get to 78 it stresses them and they can die. its harder to keep them cold than it is to heat them up like a normal fish tank. you dont need humidity and temp gauges, there shouldnt be any heat lamps, only a regular fluorescent house bulb that gives no heat. They do not need UVB either. make sure you have lots of plants, they love to hide. and for a filter, dont use a large powerful one, they hate fast moving water. i use this one and i lean it so the out flow hits the glass first to slow it down. if the link doesnt work its a Tetra Whisper internal 2-10i filter. Walmart.com: Tetra Whisper 2-10i Power Filter: Fish

also, make usre you feed him earthworms, but cut them up since they swallow whole.

Awesome, thanks guys! Can I find the slate rocks at any old landscaping/garden kind of store? Are flagstones ok?
Also, I'm a big collector of rocks. If I boil some of the rocks I have already, would that be safe to use in a newt tank?

personally, I went rock hunting along the beach LOL brought everything home and washed it in a 10-1 bleach solution and rinsed really good, and let dry out in the sun for the day.

Do NOT boil your rocks. If they contain air pockets its possible for them to explode when overheated!

Also, can you keep fish with newts? Maybe a couple of guppies or neon tetras?

you can, but you'll need a much bigger tank. The fish will require 10 gallons of water minimum.
