can newts get ich?
I have a problem!
My newly set up fish tank has an outbreak of Ich or something. I am hoping that I didn't spread it to my newt tank or baby sword tank! Can I spread it to the other tanks by the water? I did something stupid and I know it! But now I have to fix it. If so can the newt and baby fish fry be treated with quick cure? Thanks |

Re: can newts get ich?
Ick is a bacterial infection that makes the white strings. I assume you know what it looks like. I think any aquatic animal with thin skin such as common aquarium fish and amphibians can be prone to this.
Do a water change and do the conditioner again. Go to a store and get some ick specific medicine. Try to do this quickly, as ick is deadly if left too long. Oh yes, I'm fairly sure it can spread to other tanks by the water. |

Re: can newts get ich?
just great! I am so stupid. I knew better too! Ok...so I have ich med..but do I do the 1/2 treatment like for tetras cause newts don't have scales like tetras? I have a bigger tank I am moving my newt to and I will do completely new water and scrub the decorations..and treat her..but I don't want to hurt her with the meds..I have enver had to treat her before.
Any idea what I should do with the meds...like the concentration dose? |

Re: can newts get ich?
That's hard to say. Fish scales don't work in the same was that you might thing- they are dermal, with a layer of skin on top. If a normal dose doesn't hurt that skin, which is doesn't, then perhaps a normal dose for your newt? Maybe try calling a few vets, some might get generous and actually be helpful and not waste your time and money.

Re: can newts get ich?
Personally, I'd treat the newt's water with a very mild solution. It may be enough to knock out the potential ich problem before it becomes severe. Since the ich isn't even visible yet a full dosage may be too much, especially for a newt. Keep in mind this suggestion is based on assumption and not personal experience. Cleaning the tank and keeping your newt's immune system up will help.

Re: can newts get ich?
I put her in a newly set up 30 gallon SHE LOVES IT! but I just wish I wasn't so stupid darn it!
If she dies cause of me I will be so upset! I can call one vet, but I doubt he will help over the phone...it is worth a try. I read about newts adn diseases alittleon the internet. It mainly stressed that newts are very sensitive to treatments especially chemical one that could kill her>>.and if she doesn't have any ich~diseases then it will be worse to treat her and stress her with any treatment and then she could get something ~ so I do not want to hurt her more then I already have. I checked her out and didn't see anything unusual from what I could tell. I wonder if a drop or two would hurt in a 30 gallon? I wrote an email to someone I found in my search, but I am not sure I will get a response. I can call the vet tomorrow to see if they can help me. Thanks everyone for your help. I pray she will she ok. |

Re: can newts get ich?
Hi I wanted to let everyone know what the vet place said:
newts don't usually get ich..so she probably will beok since I don't see anything wrong...BUT they suggest to call an aquarium center to find out treatments from them on fungal infections or worse. I am not sure I need to do that since I was only worried about her getting ich from the fish water she was exposed to. What do you all think? I guess it won't hurt to ask them about ich and things that can be given to her =) just to find out right. |

Re: can newts get ich?
ok, so I now heard back from the person I emailed who I figured could help me! I got a reply and yes they do get ich!!! I was informed to do 15 minute bathes instead of treating the whole tank!! I can do this, so I will do this if I see any signs of ich. I was told not to treat unless she stops eatting or shows spots cause this is very stressful and hard on newts. Please pray she will be ok. I HAVE to get her better! I think I might see acouple spots on her upper tail, but I am not 100% sure it is ich or just her colors. She normally has white sopt on her belly. I doubt it is normal to have it on her upper tail so I will probably start the treatment. I am just glad she is eatting.

Re: can newts get ich?
The problem with amphibians is any chemical treatment can be very dangerous, they're far too sensitive. Treating a sick amphibian can either cure it or make it worse. Treating one that may not even be sick is likely to do more harm than good. In cases like this it's better to wait and see if any signs of illness arise, but as soon as they do begin treatment (though a very mild treatment).
