pics of the upgrade~newt
I found a 20 gallon for my newt! I took out the gravel and left the floor bare, but she likes to look down through the glass ha ha. I think the filters work better that way anyways and she won't risk swallowing any gravel. I wanted live plants, but for now plastic is going to have to work.
![]() ![]() This is the land area with river rocks. ![]() I know it isn't to natural like I like, but it is the best I can do right now. I think she likes it. What do you think? Is it a good home for a spanish ribbed newt aka Godzilla? Which is her "nic"' name now cause she wan't formally named and I had her for like 10 years I am not sure how long they live, but I might get her a friend..I am not sure yet.hey what kind of fish would like in cool water? I am not sure I want to put fish in cause I wnat to keep the water as clean as possible, but I am thinking about it. |

Re: pics of the upgrade~newt
oh I forgot to say that she has an under water filter and a regular aquarium filter...which has me worried cause there is an opening for the filter and she may be able to climb out...I am not sure how to close it off. I was afraid the under water filter wasn't strong enough for a 20 gallon cause I had problems with it in the 10 at times..I also like the way the other filter puts bubbles in the water and keeps the water moving around. Any input here?

Re: pics of the upgrade~newt
The tank looks pretty good to me, and she looks happy and well fed
As for the opening for the filter, you could cut some window screen and use that to block it off. I'm afraid she'd likely eat any fish small enough to keep in that tank though.

Re: pics of the upgrade~newt
ok thanks guys!
I lowered the water level about an inch..just high enough for the top filter to work. I was afraid she would be able to climb out =) I will do the screen..I actually have a metal wire mesh thing I could use and the water will probably be able to flow through it..but will the metal hurt her or get rusted to fast to use? thanks! oh and she eats like crazy lol so yes she is a chubber ha ha! Like all my critters and furries have a bit of a belly cause they all love to eat! I really think she likes this tank better and she eats faster with out the gravel in her way; plus I feel more relaxed with no risk of ingestion~yikes. I guess she will have to be all alone then cause she probably will eat anything she can catch and swallow. Thanks for your help. |

Re: pics of the upgrade~newt
I was thinking more along the lines of covering the empty space with mesh, except for the area where the water flows. She shouldn't be able to climb up the current. If you used a cloth mesh, that would be safer to use in the manor you were describing. Maybe try cutting up a cheap fishtank net?

Re: pics of the upgrade~newt
My thought exactly! I would be hesitant to use metal screening. It will corrode and who knows what it would leach into the water!

Re: pics of the upgrade~newt
ok..I can find netting! Thanks! I have never seen her climbing even out of the water on her "land" shelf, but I don't want to take any chances. I had her for like 8 years!
I could maybe put rocks at the opening...to block the hole and maybe make the waterfall..less powerful..and loud =) but how? I have plenty of rocks, but would it be safe enough to cover the opening and have the water pouring down it without the rocks falling into the tank? I might just forget it and do the netting it would be easier. |
