It looks much better I wouldn't use fish as a staple in the diet, just as an occasional snack now and then. Mollies and danios won't survive in your newt's water for very long anyway, they're tropical species. In the wild newts rely much more heavily on invertebrates than fish in their diet. They don't have the stamina to chase down fish outside of an enclosed aquarium, so it's not a part of their regular diet.

Another thing to consider is that if you're feeding her frozen foods, some of it might sink to the bottom. It's important that it doesn't go unnoticed because it will start to deteriorate the water quality. Even more risky is the fact that she could try and eat sunken food and wind up swallowing gravel. It's a common complication in newts. She looks like she's enjoying the new setup though

yeah I think she likes it better. I want to do live plants eventualy, but these will do for now. I am afraid she won't eat the pellets, but I am going to give it a try. Plus, I am getting those worms for her at the aquarium center (hour drive ahhh)

what about meal worms? I could put them in a dish. She sometimes will do that...but like I said she usually isn't out of the water. =) I am going to find some sort of "newt" pellets. I think Petsmart has the turtle/newt pellets as a nutritional balance diet suppose to I think. Do you have any suggests on what I should look for?

You can try mealworms, but gutloaded crickets are a better staple as far as feeder insects go (not that mealworms can't be offered too though). I'm afraid I've never compared different brands of pellets before, I only rely on them as a portion of a varied diet. Most are designed for smaller newts, like fire-bellieds though, but your newt may take them as well. If not, krill and mysis shrimp (THAT'S the shrimp I couldn't remember before) are probably appealing enough to her eyes since they're larger and look more like "real food".

Going back to the fish for a moment, other reasons they're not good staples is because they can often carry parasites that are capable of being transferred to your newt. Pet store fishes are also kept under relatively poor conditions and can contaminate your newt with more than just parasites. Most pet stores wind up having to treat their fishtanks for disease, and some of these treatments can poison your newt. The most common is copper poisoning. Like I said though, if fish are ever offered, livebearers such as danios and mollies are better than goldfish or minnows. Just figured I'd mention some more on it for anyone else who may read this in the future

thanks you so much! I really had no idea! so here is another question I thought about: how much of the pellets or krill and mysis shrimp (is this frozen?) should be offered? like everyday or also how much at a time?

I can handle crickets alsmost all my herp critters love that but I read it cause bloating too...I guess as long as it isn't fed all the time. She seems to be fine now and I have been giving her a mealworm from my hand and a cricket too. If I get the the black worms (or are they blood worms?) those tiny black looking worms in water? I havne't given those in a long time and she loves them, but half usually die before she can eat them. I don't know if it is cause I keep them in ther fridge like they do in the store or what I even put fresh water in th cup they are in???

Anyways, I will look for the krill or mysis foods. I think petsmart had the freeze dried stuff from Biopure there maybe that would work? I didn't want to get the water polluted though..I guess it doesn't matter I can just clean it more ya know.

thanks again for all your help!

OH and I forgot to mention at petsmart it looks like all the fish tanks water goes to the safe filtration unit and is shared between all the tanks. So, does this mean that ALL the fish would be contaminated if something was ill in another tank?
