my crested gecko may have a broken jaw!
Help, can they break their jaw? I have read alot of articles for feeding. I have been feeding baby food and crickets. I just bought the T-Rex crested diet. The other cagemate seems fine.

Hello Susan,
Sorry to hear about your crestie. Yes they can break bones and a loose bone, in this case the jaw, is sometimes a sign of Metabolic Bone Disease or other metabolic problem. I suggest a vet visit to get a good idea on what is going on. Have you been dusting with Ca and multivitamins? |

Thanks, sorry it took me time to find your reply. I am not good with a computer. Really confusing. I was trying to ask questions all aver the web. Bad thing is I don't know if I can find any replys. Yours is the first. This was a much eaiser site to sign up for. I first noticed my crested staying in the same place. Not coming to eat. I tried to eyedropper it. It lapped up but the --like opened it's mouth and I could see in it's throat all the liquid not swallowed. It skook it's head and like threw up . More like couldn't swallow it. But, I never forced the liquid food. It lapped it on it's own. But, this morning I found it on the cage fioor with it's bottom jaw bent back on the paper towel. POOR THING!! I felt so bad for it. Can they recover?

I'm sorry for your crestie..as Cody asked, have you been giving your Crested Geckos calcium and vitamins? I agree it sounds like he needs to be seen by a vet.

I moved your post to the appropriate forum so that others could benefit. This forum works in a threaded format, so all responses will be contained in this thread.
Some herps are able to recover from debilitating conditions, others are not. If the mouth is open look inside for the Calcium reserve sack, it should be on the left posterior part of the oral cavity. If the mouth is closed either attempt to get a peek by trying to open it carefully (if the jaw looks very weak don't attempt this) or wait for him to open it again and look. Are you dusting the food with calcium and multivitamins? The t-rex is an all in one but most geckos don't take to it very easily. |

unfortunatlly, no. I know how stupid could one be!!!! I am so mad at myself. I have lepards and have a cap of calicum with each of them!! But, I have dusted the crickets with calicum. They only get them once a week. I only, like 2 days ago got the t-rex diet. I also ordered the Clarks crested diet over the web. It is supposed to be a complete diet, it had a lot of positive reviews on the web. My crested looks fat and sassy except listless and a ( it's not like it can't hold it's jaw shut- it can. It can open and close it's mouth. It still today wants to lap food. A place on the web showed how to look in the mouth for calicum supply. It looked full.

I must be looking at the wrong thing for calicum deposits in the mouth. I thought it was the two lumps on the sides of the roof of the mouth. There will only be one lump? toward the back left side? It just tried lapping the t-rex diet. I am only going to give a few drops now and wait. Maybe it will swallow it better than letting it eat to much at once. It can't seem to hold up it's head long but they always seem to cling. Should I be keeping it in a warmer place than room temp? It's about 72. It feels cold. It is in the middle of a shed too. The head has not come off yet as it is a dull color. I am keeping it in a high humitity cage.

I'm not sure if this is any help, but what I do with the T-Rex diet is mix it in with the baby food a little. And I dust all the crickets that go into it's cage with calcium powder. I hope you have already called the vet and made the appointment, if not, do you have a vet who is certified to see reptiles in your area? You should get him to the vet first and foremost in my opinion.
