Crested gecko feeding?

I just bought my first crestie. S/he is a juvenile, unsure how old, about 4.25 inches long.
I have a couple questions.

How much should it eat, babyfood and crested gecko diet mix?

Also it spends almost all of the time in the leaves and branches of its cage. Hardly ever on the ground. Should the food dish be on floor or up in the branches?

Thanks,

Ian

Hi Ian! Welcome to HC!
Some Crested Geckos eat a lot and some don't. Just prepare a dose of CGD that fit in a tea spoon and start from there. If s/he eats all, prepare a bit more next time. If s/he eats less, keep with that dose. The important thing is sticking to the same dose so that you can track appetite increase or decrease.
I wouldn't recommend babyfood because it's basically water and sugar.

You can leave the food in the ground.

With size I would guess yours is around 8 months. Do you plan on offering any insects to your new crestie?

If your just offering baby food and crested gecko diet (CGD) I would offer it every other day. I no longer use CGD but when I did I always mixed it with baby food to make it more palatable. From what I've read, cresteds 'not' raised on the CGD hardly ever accept it just diluted with waer.

Cresteds are aboreal. The tank should be orientated in a vertical position maximizing height, not floor space. It's normal for them to spend much of their time in the 'canopy.' I've heard of cresteds that are picky eaters will eat much more when the food is placed higher (this is only what I've read). Mine eat the food off the floor, the branches, the walls, the roof....anywhere they can reach it.

I'm going to agree with chronic again... mine eat almost anywhere it is provided. I have encountered the same trouble you are having though in the past. When I couldn't get them to come down to eat I started making feeding stations where they frequent. I then daily lowered them a little till I eventually had them feeding on the floor of the tank with the rest of them. Best luck to you and keep asking questions were here to help.

My crestie babies eat mainly live black crickets with baby food now and then. They do not seem to like CGD. The crickets go in a plastic pot about 4 inches high and 3 inches diameter, they do not jump out and the Crested Geckos go in for them.
The crickets are always dusted with Nutrobal or calcium powder.
Although the Crested Geckos are mainly arboreal, they do come to the floor every day. I use no substrate and find that the easiest way to manage them. Eggs are laid in a nest box containing damp coco fibre. They also have a small pot of calcium powder.
