Eating Mouthfuls of Substrate
Short of it: My crested is eating mouthfuls of cocofiber after I spray the cage.
Full version: I changed the substrate on my oldest crested from the chunky cocofiber to the grain like cocofiber. Partly because it was old and needed changing and partly because I was getting afraid she'd eat the chunks. Like the package said I soaked the brick and the thing exploaded, I filled the terrarium with 3 inches of this stuff, put the branches and moss back in and for the next couple of weeks only gave her water in a bowl because the humidity was so high. The first nite I changed it I noticed she had a mouthfull but I thought that it was cause she was catching crickets and missed. Then yesterday I finally sprayed the cage (finally the fiber dried out) and I heard a strange racket. I went to look at her cage and she was rolling arround in it? and had a mouthful of substrate again. Why would she be doing this? Is is dangerous? should I change the substrate to the chunky kind again? Can I stop her from eating more of it? I have another crested in another tank who has been living with the grainlike cocofiber since I got her, and I've _Never_ seen her eat any of it. I also thought he was a she for the longest while but thats a different story. Any help or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |

Hmmmm... I dont think that coco fiber is as harmful as sand or other grainular substrates but none the less if hes actually ingesting as much as you say you should change his substrate ASAP! try going back to the chunky kind that he wasnt eating before. One more thing!, a friend had a similar problem with a WD he would find him every morning with moss sticking out of his mouth, we found out later on that he wasnt actually eating the substrate he was trying to eat the tiny baby crickets that had wiggles through the moss to hide.

Goge, do you mean coco humus? I have my gargoyles on those and I've never seen them eating or trying to eat it.
I use mine very very dry. If I stick my finger in it or pass my hand through it, it doesn't feel humid, it feels dry. I also don't mist the substrate, except on occasion. I mist the walls and plants every day. Anyway, a very high and constant humidity is not good for your geckos. It will lead to respiratory problems, shed problems and mold issues in your terrarium. A cycle of humidity is what you should provide. You mist the enclosure now and in twelve hours it has dried out entirely and then you mist again. I've said 12h but it depends on where you live. Some people have to wait 2 days before it all dry out. But the thing that strikes me is eating it only after you mist it... Is there any chance your misting device was used with something sweet (like juice) or any chemicals (like plant fertilizer)?
