Suspended hides made of coconuts? More inside...

I don't know why but for some reason I really want a crested or few My decision was not to get any but considering I am the winner of one of the local pet store's contests I am receiving a new 29 gallon tank!

The main thing I was wondering is could I carve coconuts in half with the saw and all that jazz, remove the inside layers of coco, cut a medium sized hole in the front side of the coconut, reseal them together with a reptile-safe silicone layer, and have it held to a large piece of driftwood or grapevine?

I can carve coconuts in to different shapes so it is much more comfortable and put a layer or two of papertowel inside for some extra comfort if it's necessary. Since I'm really wanting a beautiful and safe terranium I was wondering if this was a good idea. The first idea was a birds nest but I forgot that most circle shaped birds nests have sharp edges and sharp wheat or whatever that stuff is inside of it and outside....

I have done my research on crested care but never really have seen or heard a suspended hide sort of simiar to a bird's nest in a bird cage in a care sheet or Do-It-Yourself...

Thanks for reading and I hope to hear from alot of you

Hmm this is great! a crested or 3, a ball python, and maybey a satanic leaf tail... My dreams are going to come true!!

It sounds to me like it would work... a Dremel tool would probably be helpful.
The only thing is, how would you clean it, change the paper or get your little guy out if you needed to? I would try to somehow find a way to put it back together without having to glue it. (maybe not cutting it in half, but 1/3 and 2/3rds (?) or a zigzag edge that locks together better?)
It should look great though.

Sounds like a cool idea. Maybe when Cody (Chytrid Fungus) comes on he can answer. I would like to know if it would work to. My Crested Geckos are always hiding in the plants. lol

Sounds like a great idea.. you can buy hollowed out coconut hides already made - although they are quite expensive for what they are IMO, but they save a lot of work and hassle! Maybe you could get hold of some of these and do your plan?

Well done on winning the contest.

I posted this another forum and I got the idea of using hinges and such to open and close the coconut for cleaning and stuff it sounds like this isn't a ludacris idea afterall! My overall plan is to carve some large grapevine or driftwood enough so I can put these little wooden arms inside a hole on each side, silicone the armsor use whatever other method is mentioned to keep them stuck inside the holes and leave it connected to the drift wood. I'm still thinking if that would work...

I won the contest???? "CONFUSED"

You mentioned winning a contest at your pet store... I think that's what she's referring to.

I know this is a bit of OT... but I use hollowed out coconuts for gerbils.. I also know some people that hang them from the lids of their cages.. your idea sounds really good for creasties too. I really like the coconuts, they look very natural and have no sharp edges if cut right. I bet they would look really beautiful and be pretty safe for them. 8) I really wanna see how it looks like when you do it... here is a pic of one of mine with their gerbies inside. 8)
