Males Together
Hey guys! I'm looking to get a couple of Crested Geckos and I had a question about keeping males together. I was wanting to get babies so I wouldn't know their sex when I bought them. Is it possible to keep males together when they mature if they are in an enclosure that is big enough?
If it isn't possible to do that is there any down fall to buying mature Crested Geckos? I know the price tag is going to be a little higher. I've always had a thing for buying herps as babies because I like to watch them grow up. Will they benefit anything more from me keeping them as babies as opposed to buying them when they are matured?

Re: Males Together
I've also read that if they grow up together they'll set boundaries while they are young and no fighting would really happen. I don't know if this is true though. You can't really trust what you read on the net these days.

Re: Males Together
I agree, keeping males apart is probably the best option. If they have enough room, they may each be able to claim a territory and not cross paths, but each territory would need to have its own heat gradient, lighting, food source and water source. You'd need a *very* large enclosure, and I imagine it would be pretty difficult to get two separate, equal heat gradients within each territory. Even then, they might still cross paths sometime and fight. Some might never fight at all, but some might.
Unless you have a lot of experience with this, it might be risky. It'd actually probably be easier to get two separate enclosures and keep them next to each other, than to try to find something large enough for them both to safely live in.

Hmm alright, man I'm torn. I really want to get two but I really want them as babies. Looks like I have some thinking to do in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for the help guys!

Re: Males Together
You could get two females and keep them in the same enclosure their whole lives. Just make sure its big enough for the two of them or you can get two males and keep them together as babies, then seperate them when they mature.

Re: Males Together
I know, it's just that I want to get two babies, and I want them to live with each other, but I can't know that if they're babies. I think I may just get two females.

Re: Males Together
Even with females-Geckos of any species can be territorial so there is no absolute guarantee that 2 can live together
Granted it seems that Crested's seem to do better than some other of the Rhac's but they still can have issues If you have 2 females and one gets noticeably larger than the other you can have dominance issues and have to remove one until they are the same size and then try and reintroduce them again As was stated-you can buy two babies and keep them together until you can determine their gender and then separate them Or you can keep them each in a 10 gal tank or two tall tubs There are quite a few options but keeping sexually mature males together is not a good idea imho Sandy |
