Considering a Crested, Love My Leo...

Hello!

I have the opportunity to get a crested gecko for 'free' and I am thinking about taking them up on their offer. I say 'free' because we all know that I will end up buying at least SOMETHING for him or her, no matter how many hides I can make out of butter dishes hahaha. Anyway...I currently own a leopard gecko, and I couldn't be happier with her. Are crested gecko's as friendly as leo's? Once used to you, are they just as happy to sit on you and chill? Would you consider them to be 'flighty' (once grown and settled)? Also, I would be acquiring a baby from someone who's female laid eggs...at what age should I get him or her? Can you take them as soon as they hatch?! I know that these gecko's do not require UVB like my leo, but it appears as though their diet is a little different. I see that you feed them baby food or mashed fruit in addition to crickets - how much and how often do you feed your adults? What would you say the 'cricket to fruit' ratio is?? hahaha I guess what I mean by that is, do you offer fruit and crickets daily, alternate days, more fruit or more crickets, etc. Any other info on Crested Geckos vs. leo's would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you

I have a Leo too. Have you checked out the care sheets on this forum? They have one for the Crested Gecko.

I feed T-rex (Repashy super foods) crested gecko diet 3 times a week ( no crickets). What could be easier than that! Mix powder 1:2 with water and that is all they need. They are tame geckos but won't just sit and chill...they jump or walk around from hand to hand...i wouldn't say flighty though. And they are not that fast. Awesome geckos, i would take them over leopards any day.

You can take them from hatchlings but obviously easier to take an established adult. Babies are cute though...and you can get them onto the diet from small!

The younger the gecko the better chance you have at establishing the habits you want. The older geckos tend to b easier to care for because they are less sensitive, but they can sometimes get set in ways that you didn't want.

As for food, I have never heard of crested gecko diet, I always put a baby food jar li with some food in the cage with the geckos I cared for, I just periodically checked it if it was empty or started to get film on top I took it out I also never left it overnight.

Re: Considering a Crested, Love My Leo...

Thank you for your replies! I had checked out the care sheet - I just wanted some 'personal' opinions on them. I have read care sheets on leopard gecko's that I don't think depict what they are all about if that makes any sense. Care sheets can really only tell you so much...people who have owned them tend to have little tips and tricks and stories...that is the kind of info I am looking for. Beyond the care sheet, if you will

MRHickey - you say you put food in a baby jar lid - what kind of food are you using? Baby food only or ?? Did you feed crickets?

Caudalis - thanks! They sound pretty great...I am good with the gecko walking and moving, just not darting and running from me! Sounds like it might be a good fit for me!

i actually think they are the ultimate herp. For many reasons. Easiest to care for...good nature..character, no special lighting and very beautiful, No live food needed if fed correctly and also make very good display animals

I fed live food as well as baby food. Baby food fruit was just much easier for me to come by at the time.

Re: Considering a Crested, Love My Leo...

I know this is kind of an old post but I just wanted people to know that feeding crested geckos baby food is NOT GOOD ADVICE!!! baby food is made for humans and isn't even close to what a gecko needs, and its full of crap like presevatives and stuff. Please don't feed your crested geckos baby food.
