ANOTHER preemie

This is kind of strange and sad, I think.

One of our females, Luna, layed eggs like 110 days ago. One of them didn't even develop, while the other swelled to a rediculous size and sort of turned a greyish white with a few pink spots. I left it for 110 days (80 is the upper max for days for incubation on these guys). Anyways, the clutch she layed AFTER this clutch has already hatched. I thought the egg was dead, as it appeared to be very dead.

I was wrong. I opened the egg to find ALOT of yoke (weird that it wouldn't have absorbed some by now, must be the reason for the rediculous size ~2X the size of normal full term eggs!). I was prodding around, carefully, and something moved!!! A baby gecko, nearly full size, was moving and even squeaked in there!

I rushed to deliver the baby, who is moving its jaw and kind of the legs. The sad thing here is that the babies head looks quite deformed. The top, just behind the eyes, is bulbous and thinner than the rest of the skull. It is red and looks cracked (doubtful that it's part of the 'c section' I just gave- I was very careful). At any rate, even if the cracks and reddish color are ignored, this skull is deformed. The baby is underdeveloped and I doubt it'll make it very long.

It can't have been a diapause thing, I've read that occurs earlier. I think this is just another case of the 'first clutch failure' that plagues many reptiles.

Rest assured I'm fighting for this baby. I have no doubt in my mind it would have never hatched- this baby is a mess. At least now that it's in my world I can do everything I can to help it, or ease its passing.

Re: ANOTHER preemie

He died just now, minutes after that post.

Sad. His skull deformity is worse than I thought- it bulges and dips. The neck looks malformed and his ear area is not developed well either. Another few weeks development, I'd say, and he'd have been fully developed- it's just too for him that he was SOO overdue and the egg started to die.

I always blame myself in these situations. At least the quick death he got here is alot better than starving to death in the egg (as he wasn't absorbing ANY yoke)

Re: ANOTHER preemie

It's frozen right now, since the ethanol would demolish the attached yoke sac. I'm gonna offer it to UofC, someone I know is working on gecko embryology there.

I see. I'd like to have a look before you ship it off though.

Re: ANOTHER preemie

That's really sad to hear, but sometimes these things just happen. Poor little guy.

Re: ANOTHER preemie

Yeah we didn't expect much from this females first clutch. I actually expected her to be a lousy breeder cause she's had health problems in the past, but she is definately our best breeder at the moment.

yes, Mike, I trust you'll see the baby on tuesday at around the same time I get my feeder/money windfall.
