Crested Geckos

I am thinking about a crested gecko. I know this has already been asked, but does anyone know the price of one if you get it in Denver like at Petsmart, Petco, or at Scales and Tails I am thinking about getting one at Scales and Tails, but dont know the price. Another question, Is a long tank (like a ten gallon) or a tall tank better I have heard that the taller tanks are better for them to climb, but more pricier. Sorry, I have another question: Are crested geckos hardy? Does anyone have suggestions on lighting? Thanks!

Re: Crested Geckos

well crested geckos need a tall enclosure. As for them being hardy...as long as your care is what is needed they are quite hardy. Lighting is not a real important factor with these geckos, if your gecko is getting fed correctly and supplemented uvb is not needed. The best books I have read on crested geckos are by the legend himself Philippe De Vosjoli.

Crested Geckos: From the Experts at Advanced Vivarium Systems

Rhacodactylus: The Complete Guide to their Selection and Care by Philippe De Vosjoli

both these books will give you everything you need to know. I personally own the Rhacodactylus book and it is outstanding.

Re: Crested Geckos

there are many argumernts as to what they need to eat, but they eat both insects and fruit. read the caresheet from this site and a book or two to choose what is good for you. T-rex products also make a good formulated crested gecko diet that I know of...i know of many breeders that purly use this, but they will always enjoy some crickets and fresh mashed fruit.Crested Gecko Caresheet

At stores they are about $45-100 depending on the morph, size, and sex. Breeders and online sales are usually a little easier to work with and are much much cheaper. Shows will always be the best bet, costs associated with going to the show usually make it a more economical choice still.

Crested's are arboreal, they enjoy the height and will jump within the enclosure if given the room, which is a real treat to see. Tall tanks are not more than standards, it's just that they don't make 10 and 20 gallon tanks that are arboreal, an adequate tank size for them that doesn't have to be modified probably starts at about 37 gallons or so (I bought a cube last month for $100 that would be perfect). It's really hard to beat the price of 20 gallon tanks so converting one of those would be the easiest and cheapest. Building your own or using large Tupperware (sterilite's) is another option.

Ask away. Crested's are very hardy geckos, with an extensive lifespan.
Lighting will depend on if you have live plants or not. The photo period is necessary as they are nocturnal and will sleep during the day when the lights are on and come out when they are off so that natural cycle needs to be emulated.

For food they eat a large variety of insects and fruits. I feed crickets, phoenix worms, earth worm segments, pretty much anything that moves they will go after (including hatchlings). For the fruits I stuck with tropical fruits such as banana and mango, you can freeze the left overs and thaw as needed. I would puree all of it up and freeze it in a ziplock, break off a peice, thaw, and mix in the supplements.

Cresteds are great, they got me hooked, when I have more time and space I plan to get back into them.

Re: Crested Geckos

Thank you so much for all of your suggestions! Very helpful! I have an endless amount of questions: can they eat baby food in a small dish, should you mix calcium in with the baby food or leave it in a small dish in the terrarium, how often should you hold them, do you really need a light and/or a heat source, and do they like live plants or fake (what's better for them?) Thanks again for any suggestions! ~geckogirl95
